The
RHSV is the most extensive single information resource on the history
of Melbourne and Victoria. We welcome visitors and the public to our
activities.
With the support of a large number of volunteers, our activities include:
research facilities - open Monday to Friday, 10am - 4pm
ongoing temporary exhibitions featuring treasures from the RHSV
collection
regular lectures conducted by well-informed speakers
tours of the Society's collections and exhibitions are available
for community groups, affiliated societies and schools, with an
introductory talk by the curator (phone 9326 9288 for details)
conferences, workshops, seminars and schools of historical research,
providing opportunities to explore and enjoy Victoria's history
excursions, walking and coach tours to sites of historical interest
are conducted regularly by RHSV and local guides
we also publish a monthly newsletter, History News, the Victorian
Historical Journal and books of historical interest.
Each month, between
February and November, evening and lunchtime lectures are held at
the Societys premises on the corner of William and ABeckett
Streets, Melbourne (access to lectures from William Street).
Speakers address a wide range of subjects relating to Victorian history.
One session is offered to postgraduate historians from Victorian universities,
another is run in conjunction with the La Trobe Society, while a third
is the Fellows Invitation Lecture.
Evening lectures commence at 5.45pm, with tea/coffee available from
5.15pm., Lunchtime lectures at 1.00pm.
Lectures are free to members, guests $5.50.
A grant from the Telematics Trust has enabled the RHSV to begin recording a selection of lectures held throughout the year as well as other audio files to make available online as RHSV Podcasts.
The Schools of Historical Research introduce researchers to the rich collections of primary source materials held in archival repositories in and near Melbourne -
official government records held by the Public Record Office Victoria, National Archives of Australia, manuscript and newspaper collections of the State Library of Victoria,
as well as institutional archives and collections, including the collections of the University of Melbourne.
Each session of the School will be conducted by professional historians, librarians, curators or archivists, with helpful hints provided by practicing researchers.
The 2005 School of Historical Research (November 21 -23) will focus on archival sources and collections relating to women's history. It will provide an insight into some of the State's lesser known collections as well as an opportunity to make a head start on any research / study projects for next year.
