The bi-annual Victorian Historical Journal is the foremost
academic publication dealing with Victorian history. Formerly known
as the Victorian Historical Magazine, it was first published in 1911,
when the editors emphasised reminiscences, memories and obituaries.
Recent special editions of the Victorian Historical Journal
have focussed on the sesquicentenary of the discovery of gold in Victoria,
colonial governance and this history of the Victorian police force.
The five volume index is available for purchase and is recommended
for researchers. The fifth volume has just been released.
In 2001, the Society published, with support from Heritage Victoria,
a special edition of the Victorian Historical Journal to
commemorate the sesquicentenary of the discovery of gold in Victoria
and in 2002 the special edition, published with the support of the
La Trobe Society, focussed on colonial governance
The Society sells a
range of publications which promote various aspects of Victoria's
history. These include works published by the Society, using material
from our manuscript and images collections, as well as books published
