Croydon is a very attractive suburb of the greater city of Melbourne. From whatever direction you arrive, Croydon is always green with the Dandenong Ranges in the background giving a setting of great beauty and charm. yet Croydon was not always a suburb of Melbourne, because as recently as 1955 you could still call Croydon a separate country town with great individuality. Many roads were unmade. Arches of gum trees overhanging the roads were ‘the norm’. Croydon had a famous market , whilst the electric train service ran on the hour.
