Media release: Royal Historical Society of Victoria announces new Executive Director

On behalf of the Council of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria (RHSV), President, Robert Pascoe, is pleased to announce Dr Steven Cooke has been appointed to the role of Executive Director.

Dr Cooke brings to this role many years of experience in the cultural heritage field.

The RHSV was formed in 1909 to advance how Victorians understand our history.

It serves as a catalyst for the 340 historical societies across the state, in every hamlet, suburb and country town.

Dr Cooke has read the RHSV’s strategic plan, and sums it up in one phrase: ‘History with Purpose’.

‘We are here to ignite curiosity and wonder, to inspire debate, to explore histories and question histories and how they shape both the present and the future’, he says.

The Royal Historical Society is based in a heritage-listed drill hall at the corner of William and A’Beckett Streets.

It offers a range of public lectures, walking tours and exhibitions and assists its 1400 members with history research and writing.
