SUMMARY:Eltham South Farms Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:For the Eltham District Historical Society’s excursion on Saturday 4th March they intend to walk around the area that was the earlier location of the Eltham South Farms\, which is now parkland and residential subdivisions. It will include views of the Diamond Creek valley from Porter Street\, the parkland known as Barak Bushland and a traverse of the perimeter of the former Fabbro farm land in Bell Street. \nThey will discuss the former farmers such as the Falkiners\, Wests\, Fabbros and Bollas and note the locations of their houses. Maurie Fabbro was the last of the family members to use their land for market garden purposes. Some people may remember him in the fields tending his rows of artichokes and other plantings. \nOne of Eltham’s oldest houses is the former Souter farmhouse now incorporated into a modern house. Although hidden from the street we can walk past this property. \nThis walk is about 2.5 km in length and will take 2 to 2.5 hours.\nIt will start at 2pm at the corner of Ely Street and Falkiner Street. SUMMARY:Eltham Lower Park
DESCRIPTION:Prior to the extension of European people into the lands of the Nillum-bik in the late 1830s the Wurundjeri people had been meeting in the area now known as Eltham Lower Park for thousands of years. Waterway junctions had a particular attraction as tribal meeting places and the junction of the Diamond Creek with the Yarra River (Birr-arung to the Wurundjeri) was one such important location in terms of aboriginal culture. The sculpture “Not Just a Pretty Place” by Aleks Danko\, located near the junction of these two watercourses pays tribute to this important cultural location. \nThe first European settlers were squatters or leaseholders and itinerants such as timber workers. Records of their early occupation are sketchy but the Eltham Lower Park area was probably included within the pastoral run established in 1841 by Henry Foley. He sold his leasehold in 1845 to Joseph Wilson who in turn sold it to Frederick Faulkner soon after. \nFrom this early history the Eltham Lower Park area has undergone many changes and has been developed to provide residents and visitors with a range of passive and active public open space\, including even being used for various horse racing events. \nAt the Eltham District Historical Society’s next meeting\, Jim Connor will explore the history of Eltham Lower Park and touch on various individuals and groups involved along the way. As always\, Society members and visitors are most welcome to attend this meeting.

SUMMARY:Eltham Historical Society meeting: Photographs of John Henry (Harry) Clark
DESCRIPTION:A prominent photographer in the early days of Eltham was John Henry (Harry) Clark. At the regular Eltham & District Historical Society meeting in August they will explore some selected Clark images from the collection and\, with some\, try to show the current locations where the photographs were taken. \nAs always\, Society members and visitors are most welcome to attend this meeting\, to be held in the Eltham Senior Citizens’ Centre\, Library Place\, Eltham. \n  \nFrom the Eltham & District Historical Society Newsletter \nJ.H.Clark – photographer by Peter Pidgeon\nJohn Henry (Harry) Clark born 1877 was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). Following William’s death that same year\, Maria formed a relationship with Robert Conley who took on her young family and another son\, Robert Conley Jnr\, was born 1880. Maria and Robert married in 1885. \nJohn and his brothers\, William Charles Clark (1872-1945)\, Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street\, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914.\nFollowing the death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914\, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved\, the premises demolished with a new house under construction by 1915. \nJohn appears to have set up business independently in 1914 operating from 29 Moor Street\, Fitzroy where he was registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. It is understood he boarded with widow Mrs Thekla Jarrold with whom he may have taken rooms during earlier visits since 1910. \nAround 1930 John changed professions from Photographer to Bootmaker. He became well regarded as a leather worker of expertise who also crafted horse harnesses. He opened a small bootmaker’s shop built by Thekla Jarrold on her property\, near the pond at the bottom of the hill. \nJohn never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop\, maintaining a close relationship with Thekla until her death in 1943. His bootmaker’s shop remains today beside the White Cloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the Little Eltham area from the early 20th century.

SUMMARY:Heritage Excursion - Along The Maroondah Aqueduct
DESCRIPTION:Eltham District Historical Society is organising a wonderful walk … \nThe Maroondah Aqueduct was once a major link in Melbourne’s water supply system. It was built between 1886 and 1891 to transfer water from the Watts River near Healesville to Preston Reservoir. It was 66 km in length made up of 41 km of open channel\, 10 km of tunnels through hills and 15 km of pipeline across stream valleys known as inverted siphons. The section of the aqueduct through Research and Eltham has been abandoned since the 1980s but the open channel has largely been retained. A recreational path follows the aqueduct reserve. \nThe walk starts where the aqueduct crosses Ingrams Road Research\, near the corner of The Esplanade (Melway ref 12 G12).\nThe intention is to walk along the aqueduct path as far as Parsons Road and return\, a distance of about 4 km. This distance can be shortened on the day depending on the weather. This free walk is open to the public as well as Society members. SUMMARY:Heritage Excursion - Eltham Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Stories connect us to our local heritage. March is Women’s History Month. During our first excursion of the year\, we will recognise the contributions of some local women to our community. Nestled on high ground\, once overlooking the village of Eltham we will tour the Eltham Cemetery and share stories of women now interred in these grounds. From pioneer women to the first woman in Eltham to attend University. From the silent film actress to the community spirited politician. From the post mistress to the World War One nurse. \nThis free excursion is open to the general public as well as members and friends of the Society. Dogs are not permitted. Enter the car park from Metery Road\, Eltham\, follow signs for parking\nand note this walk is on uneven ground in places. Please meet at the rotunda near the lake\, for 2.00 pm start on Saturday 5 March 2022\, 2.00pm – 3.30pm. Bookings are not necessary and\nany COVID requirements will be in place. \nThe Eltham District Historical Society appreciates the support we receive from the Eltham Cemetery Trust\, including being able to undertake our heritage excursions within the well\nmaintained\, attractive grounds of their cemetery.

Thank\nyou to the members who organised these. You are encouraged to keep a journal about your day\nto day experiences\, which can be the basis for a future written or oral history piece. Yarra Plenty\nRegional Library has some helpful information. Recording these times \n• State Library Victoria has recently launched their Memory Bank Project to archive what everyday\nlife in Victoria is actually like now\, during this time of collective isolation. Memory Bank is a longterm\ncollecting project that invites you to share your everyday observations of pivotal moments\nin time. Extraordinary moments\, and ordinary ones too\, can easily be lost in the day’s blur or\nforgotten in a week’s time. More information and suggestions \n• Nillumbik U3A is providing a weekly online newsletter full of news\, fun\, stories and competitions:\nThey also have a number of online videos about activities you may wish to investigate \n• In our first edition we suggested that now was a good time to go through your family photos.\nThe National Archives of Australia has some good advice on how to look after your family archive \n• Yarra Plenty Regional Library is extending their book valet service to include movies and TV\nshows. A recommended reading list will be sent to you\, curated by librarians. The library is also\nco-ordinating a project with the City of Banyule\, asking crafters to knit squares for a community\nblanket \n• Our Street Library remains open so if you are out walking\, please drop in at the Local History\nCentre\, 728 Main Road\, Eltham. \n• Happy Mother’s Day to our mothers for Sunday May 10th. In 1968 The Australian Women’s\nWeekly asked readers to send in responses to “Which gift pleased you most”. The resulting\narticle includes many ideas (or adaptions of)\, which are relevant today. \nAre you or your family connected to Eltham District?
