His latest co-authored book with the RHSV is The Story of Melbourne’s Lanes – Essential but Unplanned (2024). Copies of this book will be available to purchase for $50 and all proceeds will go to the RHSV. Cash is preferred. \nRefreshments will be served. \nWe welcome your attendance at the Just Theatre\, Kew Court House\, 188 High Street\, Kew\, 7.30pm for 8pm. Tickets are priced at $20 and can be purchased at the door\, by phone to 9278 4770 or via this link: \nhttps://www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/events/mcintyre-lecture-2025-power-place-story-melbourne-lanes \nRefreshments will be served before and after the Lecture. SUMMARY:2024 McIntyre Lecture
DESCRIPTION:2024 McIntyre Lecture -Kew Historical Society Inc \nFAILED AMBITIONS: A HISTORY OF KEW COTTAGES by Dr Lee-Ann Monk & Dr David Henderson \nOpened in 1887\, Kew Cottages was Australia’s first purpose built institution for people with intellectual disabilities. Contemporaries considered it a ‘distinct advance on anything yet done for the feebleminded children in Australia’. Five decades later the institution had become the subject of almost universal condemnation. In the words of Rohan Rivett\, the cottages had become ‘a hillside of\nsadness’\, where residents eked out a bare existence in an institution which lacked even the most basic amenities. \nThe lecture by Lee-Ann Monk and David Henderson follows the release of their groundbreaking history of the Kew Cottages in 2023. \nWednesday 13 March\,7.30 for 8.00pm\nJust Theatre\, Kew Court House\n188 High Street\, Kew VIC 3101 \nTICKETS\nIn person lecture\, with refreshments $20.\nTickets at door\, online at www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/events/ \nor by phone 9278 4770 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fashion in the Age of Elegance 1840-1900
DESCRIPTION:In a foreign climate and environment\, how did European women adapt to living in rural Victoria and the emerging suburbs of Melbourne? Explore and delight in the opulent tastes and styles adopted by women through nineteenth century gowns from the fashion and design collection of the Kew Historical Society. \nMary Ann Henty came with her husband\, Francis Henty to the Port Phillip District immediately after their marriage in Launceston in 1842. The gown she wore at the ceremony is the centrepiece of a large collection of gowns owned and worn by pioneering Victorian families. A number of our newly acquired costumes in the Henty Collection will join other historic costumes donated by descendants of the Coombs and Weir families. \nThe exhibition includes silken gowns worn for special events such as weddings and balls as well as examples of day dresses used for entertaining at home and when visiting. It will allow you to view evolving styles of outerwear and undergarments\, which only occasionally responded to a new climate and environment. \nThe exhibition runs for three weekends and will be supplemented by a series of midweek lectures on the activities and tastes of women in colonial Victoria. The formal rooms of the Villa Alba Museum \, 44 Walmer Street\, Kew\, 3101\, will form a vivid background to the items exhibited. \n  \nOpen Saturdays & Sundays 22 April – 7 May\, 10am-12pm\, 1pm–3pm. Tickets range from $20-$25 \nBookings at:  https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/fashion-in-the-age-of-elegance-tickets-560162139037

Annual Dickinson Lecture; \nRemembering Our State School Teachers and Pupils of Kew and Surrounds: The Home Front and Battle Front\, 1914-18 presented by Dr Rosalie Triolo\nThe Great War profoundly touched the lives of Australian teachers\, school children and local\ncommunities. Many teachers fought and died\, and were joined by their older students. For years after\, the names of those who fell were respectfully displayed on school honor boards\, in honor books and remembered by other commemorative means\, including through the introduction of Anzac Day. \nDr Rosalie Triolo will explore how teachers and school communities were affected by patriotic appeals and activities\, and how they responded to\nthe long years of grim news from Gallipoli\, the Western Front and other sites of training\, fighting and convalescence. \n  \n19 October 2022\nJust Theatre\, Kew Court House\n188 High Street\, Kew VIC 3101\nWednesday 7.30 for 8 pm\nTickets $20\, can be purchased through Boroondara Arts bookings website\, or 9278 4770 or  kch@boroondara.vic.gov.au \n  \n
