SUMMARY:The Dominatrix Next Door
DESCRIPTION:🎭 The Dominatrix Next Door – Mother by day\, Dominatrix by night. \nWhen a cash-strapped single mother of two in suburban Melbourne has a fun idea to start a side hustle running workshops for hens’ parties\, she has no idea it will lead her on a surreal adventure (or twenty) through the debaucherous underground world of kink clubs and swingers’ parties. Nor does she know that it will bring her out on the other end as one of Australia’s most recognised Dominatrixes. \nMistress Jane is the Melbourne-based kinkster\, fetish queen\, sex nerd and mother of two (but not in that order). Whether hosting hens’ parties and club events\, writing\, podcasting\, or running workshops\, she imparts her unique brand of flirtation and female empowerment to everything she touches. \nBookings are essential with a gold coin for entry.

SUMMARY:The Great Orange Peel Panic: and other stories from Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:🍊 The Great Orange Peel Panic: and other stories from Melbourne \nDid you know around the 1860’s civic reprobates who discarded orange peel in the streets of Melbourne\, risked life and limb? Apparently new flagstone paving stones\, combined with discarded orange peels\, were a serious hazard. Oranges were a popular snack at the time and peel littered the pavements\, with women blamed by the newspapers as the ‘chief strewers of peel’. \nJoin us as Robyn Annear talks about this story and more from her new book Corners of Melbourne. Robyn is an author who…’tackles her sprawling subject matter with her trademark wit and her knack for singling out the perfect historical reference.’ Age \nThis is a joint event with Family History Connections. SUMMARY:A Musical Ouroboros
DESCRIPTION:🎶 A Musical Ouroboros – how the Hottest 100 both reflects and encourages the empowerment of Australian youth. \nFor 30 years\, triple j’s Hottest 100 has been Australia’s go-to countdown for the year’s top songs. Beyond mere entertainment\, it’s a reflection of youth sentiment. In the past\, it echoed Gen X rebellion with bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Today\, it’s a diverse tapestry showcasing female artists\, LGBTQ+ voices\, and people of colour\, mirroring a generational shift. This countdown isn’t just about music; it’s a space where young Aussies steer the conversation. Their votes drive the event’s success\, inadvertently giving them a platform and a voice in shaping cultural dialogue. \nBookings are essential with a gold coin for entry.

SUMMARY:Melbourne’s Great Metropolitan Railways
DESCRIPTION:🚇 Melbourne’s Great Metropolitan Railways – With A Nod Over The Border \nA little over one hundred years ago\, Australia’s first electrified suburban railways commenced operations. Melbourne led the way when electric trains ran between Essendon and Sandringham on 28 May 1919. Sydney followed suit seven years later when its first electric train ran between Central and Oatley on 1 March 1926. Within the year\, Sydney’s electric trains also ran into Australia’s first underground railway. \nMelbourne’s Great Metropolitan Railways celebrates the birth and development of Melbourne’s electric railways from the Federation of Australia into the new Millennium\, through good times and bad\, with a nod across the border and elsewhere. It tells how railway electrification was the nation building enterprise of the early 20th Century. It shows how these railways became Melbourne’s public transport backbone. \nBookings are essential with a gold coin for entry.

SUMMARY:Bushrangers\, bushfires and possum pies: the archaeology of the Old Bridge Inn\, Mernda
DESCRIPTION:🥧 Bushrangers\, bushfires and possum pies: the archaeology of the Old Bridge Inn\, Mernda \nIn 2015\, the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) commissioned Dr Vincent Clark & Associates to carry out cultural heritage investigations for the Mernda Rail Extension Project. In the course of excavations the team came across the Old Bridge Inn. This is one of the earliest commercial structures outside of Melbourne. It was granted a hotel license in 1841\, and this business is still in operation today as The Bridge Inn Hotel. Dr Michelle Negus Cleary will share with us the trials and joys discovered along the way with this cultural investigation. \nMichelle is an Archaeologist with specialist expertise in ancient and historical archaeological survey and excavation\, remote sensing\, photogrammetry and more. She has also been a member of the library board since 2018. \n  \nThis is a History Month event
