70 Years: The Story of the Metropolitan Golf Club by John Kissling, edited by Keith Brown (Secondhand Book)

SECONDHAND BOOK

A history of the Metropolitan Golf Club, Oakleigh, Victoria, which includes the History of the Caulfield Golf Club and a short account of early golf in Victoria.

The history of the Metropolitan Golf Club is also part of the story of the growth of the game of gold in Melbourne and the changing social life of its people. It is a story of educated and cultured men, leading citizens of their day, who planned their recreation in the same efficient way as they did their businesses or professions. They wanted something worthwhile and were prepared to work hard to get it. Playing at Caulfield before the turn of the century they saw the land boom and crash of the 1880s and 90s before gradual encroachment of buildings forced them to seek new pastures. The move to Oakleigh, then almost a wilderness, in 1908 was a bold one, but it paved the way for the development of one of Australia’s greatest courses. The Club has always been faced with problems, big and small. How it has surmounted them to reach its present position of eminence in the golf world makes a rewarding story.
