Description
SECOND HAND BOOK
This book undertakes to present the story of the Catholic Church in Victoria from the earliest settlement up to modern times. It tries to present Catholic life as it was lived over the whole State — in cities, country towns and in remote areas. Accordingly, the country diocese form an integral and important part of this history.
The progress of the Catholic Church has been intimately bound up with the economic growth of the State of Victoria; for this reason, statistics have been found to be a valuable instrument of research.
An orderly and balanced history must make generalisations, but the author hopes that enough individual examples have been included to enable the reader to have a sympathetic understanding of Catholic life in past years.
The book has been aimed, primarily, at the general reader but it is hoped that it will also aid the serious student; the indexes and the bibliography should assist both types of reader. The author has included copious references to original documents, not only to support the statements he makes, but also to assist further research.
