A trilogy of hardcover books with dust jackets in their slipcase.
Published by The Herald and Weekly Times, Melbourne, 1987 to mark Australia’s bicentennial in 1988. All are hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). First Edition. 6.2 kg; in original slipcase which is rubbed and marked. The 3 books in the set show no signs of damage.
Volume 1. 288 pages, with bibliography and index. Illustrated with reproductions in both colour, and black-and-white of artworks and maps and documents. The book covers the 1st 7 decades from Gov Arthur Phillip’s arrival with the 1st Fleet. Originally published by Rigby, Adelaide, in 1975.
Volume 2. 296 pages with bibliography and index. Similarly illustrated, with the addition of black-and-white photographs, this book continues the survey of the Australian story by describing the period from the gold rush days through to world War I. Originally published a decade earlier in 1977?
Volume 3. 296 pages, again similarly illustrated, but now with the addition of colour photography, and some graphs and statistics, covering the period from World War I through to 1987, which is when the book was reissued in anticipation of the Bicentennial. Written to accompany the re-issue of the first two volumes for the Bicentennial.
Attribution of the publication year comes from the 2nd volume dust jacket fold over flap which states that the book is being reissued in 1987. There is no mention of the book has been revised, but volume 3 does have very young photographs of Bob Hawke, Paul Keating, and John Howard and mention of the political scene of 1987
