SECOND HAND BOOK — EX LIBRARY
Excerpt from Introduction to the First Edition:
“In this bicentennial year it is fitting that the story of the occupation of the Bellarine Peninsula should be told. Although we are chiefly concerned with remembering the foundation of Sydney, we can spare a thought for the foundations of Victoria. While there were two earlier attempts to establish settlements at Sorrento and Western Port and the Hentys were established at Portland, it is true to say that it was the efforts of John Batman and the Port Phillip Association which led to the rapid peopling of the Port Phillip District, which in a short fifteen years became the separate colony of Victoria. The base camp for this occupation was, however briefly, at Indented Head, so the Bellarine Peninsula can be called the cradle of Victoria. . . .”
