Description
SECOND HAND BOOK – EX LIBRARY
Early in the twentieth century it became possible to use the blood of one person to save the life of another. Already rich in social and spiritual meaning, blood quickly became vital to medical practice, underpinning advances in fields as different as surgery and immunology. Demand for blood continually rose, yet meeting this need was difficult for blood, unlike other medicines, cannot be artificially manufacturer.
In 1929 the Victorian Red Cross Division established Australia’s first major Blood Transfusion Service. The Blood Service called for volunteers willing to be bled so that strangers in need could be healed. The gifts of blood it has received have saved the lives of hundred of thousands of Victorians. The great demand for blood, however, has brought complications. The blood service has had to struggle for adequate resources and to safeguard against the inherent dangers of blood.
Blood Matters explores what it means to rely on the gift of blood, interweaving the stories of donors and recipients, the Red Cross and its Blood Service, metropolitan and rural communities, and hospitals and governments.
