Chis: The Life and Work of Alan Rowland Chisholm (1888-1981) by Stan Scott (Second Hand Book)

SECOND HAND BOOK

Alan Rowland Chisholm (1888-1981) was, during much of the last century, Australia’s leading teacher of and researcher in modern European literatures. Stan Scott’s biography, written immediately after Chis’s death and with full access to the surviving papers, is an informed and sympathetic portrait of an exceptional contributor to the intellectual and cultural life of this country. The emphasis in this privileged firsthand testimony is on the literary scholar and on the unfolding of his philosophically grounded critical method. There is, however, much on a New South Wales country childhood, on schooling and university study in Sydney, on sojourn in France and Germany before the First World War, on life in the trenches of the Western Front, and on the long years of employment (1921-1956) at the University of Melbourne preceding a productive retirement that reinforced the reputation of the critic and occasional poet.
