Many settlers also shared their wartime experiences.

James Affleck was born in Warrnambool. After thirty years of farming his interest to things military, and now completed seven books including Geelong Grammarians at the Great War; Stories Untold and Faces Forgotten: Great War enlistments from Koroit, Port Fairy, Macarthur, Penshurst and surrounding hamlets; Soldiering On: Caramut and the Soldier Settlement movement; Tarrone Estate: Soldier Settlement. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the veterans’ community in 2011.
