From The Horse’s Mouth: Twelve of Melbourne’s pioneer market garden families recollect by Joy E Rainey (Secondhand Book)

SECONDHAND BOOK

This book, a social history, captures the nitty gritty of pioneer market garden life in Southern Victoria, Australia.

Early twentieth century comes to life, told by a group seldom mentioned, who helped to form the backbone of Australia’s history. Thirty seven people speak for themselves, tell their stories, their own words, which have been carefully recorded and transcribed.

These narrations are supported by some fifteen hundred photographs, generously shared by the speakers and gathered from musty cupboards, aged albums and boxes stored atop wardrobes.

Throughout, is the beat of horses’ hooves, laborious squeaks of laden lorries pulled by the big draught horses. These big horses, the Clydesdales, were fellow workers and an integral part of the extended family. Horse power was essential for these big gardening enterprises.
