Havens Portfolio: Victorian High Country Hut Photographs 1992-2010 by David Oldfield.

Extract from the introduction

I began my project to produce a photographic documentary record of the huts in the High Country of Victoria in about 1992. I had been a bushwalker since arriving in Australia in 1967 and had often appreciated the shelter of those huts which had been erected by earlier generations of cattlemen or miners. I soon found that I was most interested in the interiors of the huts and the ways that their builders and subsequent visitors left their mark. The huts were built as working structures to give shelter and warmth to cattlemen checking on their stocks or miners at the end of another hard day. My aim was to take black and white photographs to portray the character of the huts and those who used them. … The book contains photographs of the huts I had visited before the fires, many of which were not featured in ‘Havens’, plus photographs from the rebuilding of huts lost in the 2003 and 2006/07 fires and other huts visited since 2003.
