Description
SECOND HAND BOOK
Following the successful re-publication of narratives by Captain Watkin Tench (under the title, Sydney’s First Four Years), the story of John White, Surgeon-General to the First Fleet and the settlement at Port Jackson, is now presented under its original title.
This new edition of one of Australia’s most valuable “foundation” books contains the whole of the text of the first edition, reproductions of the numerous illustrations originally published, and much informative modern material. The new material includes a biographical introduction by Rex Rienits, editorial comments by Alec H. Chisholm, and a large number of explanatory notes.
Although the author of this Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales was the Principal Surgeon of the Colony, and although his illustrations all concern flora and fauna, his narrative is not by any means restricted to medical work and natural history. It also contains most illuminating material of a general nature — details of happenings and sights and scenes during the voyage of the First Fleet; summaries of events as the infant settlement of Sydney struggled to find its feet; accounts of exploratory journeys; and numerous stories of encounters with aborigines.
Not the least interesting portions of the book are the notes touching on Surgeon White’s own behaviour in Sydney, including his serious quarrel with another surgeon, his friendship with one of the “Scottish Martyrs”, and his relations with a woman convict.
