Melbourne’s Radical Bookshops: History, People, Appreciation by John Sendy (Secondhand Book)

SECONDHAND BOOK

Melbourne’s Radical Bookshops – humanist, libertarian, socialist, communist and anti-authoritarian. John Sendy has used his considerable knowledge of the Melbourne radical scene of the last fifty years to write this account of Melbourne’s radical bookshops.

It is a unique portrayal of some remarkable personalities who have contributed much to Melbourne’s cultural history: Will Andrade, James Pyke, Elsie Champion, Roy Rawson, Ellis and Margaret Bird, Robert Ross, Harry Barker and Jack Morrison among others.

John Sendy, author of the autobiographical history of the Communist Party of Australia, Comrades Come Rally (Nelson, 1978) joined the Australian Communist Party in 1942. By 1943, he was spending his off-duty hours from the RAAF working in a party bookshop in Camberwell. But his experience of radical bookshops in Melbourne has spanned his entire career as a serviceman, industrial worker, party functionary and more recently as a writer.
