SECONDHAND BOOK – EX-LIBRARY
George Coles, founder of the G.J. Coles chain of retail stores, was the eldest of six brothers. His father had been a small-town shopkeeper and his fluctuating finances forced his son to gain an early grounding in the retail business.
From his early involvement in two stores in rural Victoria, George Coles built a nationwide chain of over 200 stores, familiarly known throughout Australia as ‘Coles’.
The expansion and prosperity of the company was not built without some cost to the relationship between the brothers, but their sound business principles of good service, good value and no customer credit endure to this day.
This is a personal history of the growth of the Coles company, based on interviews and research done before George’s death. Judith McLaughlin is a daughter of G.J. Coles and her book reveals a special insight into George Coles: founder, businessman, and father.
