Pioneer Teachers of the Kelly Country. By L J Pryor and G W Pryor

The schools of North-East Victoria in the 1870s and 80s were often primitive structures with bark slab walls and shingle or tin roofs, freezing in winter and furnaces in summer. This book documents the Head Teachers and their schools during this period in the “Kelly Country” of north-east Victoria. Included is the story of Thomas Curnow, a Glenrowan teacher, who was a hero in the siege. The Kelly gang had pulled up some railway line, however Curnow was able to wave down the police train and avert a catastrophe.
