FIFTY YEARS AGO, THE ROULSTONS. the then proprietors of the “Dandenong Journal” (formerly the “South Bourke & Mornington Journal”) published in this initial story of Dandenong’s Yester-Years, written by the late George Fenton Roulston, one of the Roulston Bros. actively associated with” The Journal” of those days, with his brother, William Fenton (Bill) Roulston.
The front cover page: Southern entrance to Dandenong from Gippsland at the turn of the century, across the old stone bridge over the Dandenong Creek, built in 1867; the back cover: Taken in the horse and bullock team days of the late 1850’s, this photo shows John Hemmings’ modest wheelwright and carpentry business in Pultney St., Dandenong. Behind are small cottages fronting Langhorne St., and remnants of the red-gum forest left by timber-getters and charcoal burners.
