This is the story of Australia’s first chaplain, Rev. Richard Johnson, who arrived on the First Fleet in 1788 and remained in Sydney until October, 1800. The author, Rev. Neil Macintosh, has assessed the contribution made by the first chaplain to the Colony of New South Wales and to the beginnings of the Church in Australia. Chaplain Johnson’s life and work in the colony are discussed in detail and attention has been paid to his relations with successive governors of NSW.
