William Fraser Sutherland was born in the Melbourne suburb of Kew in 1895, the fourth child in a family of eight. He was educated at Kew State School, Scotch College and the Melbourne University. He served in France in the First World War, and on his return completed his M.A. degree and then three years in The Theological Hall. He was prominent in student affairs and was Secretary of the Students Representative Council, President of The Student Christian Movement and gained his Blue in cricket. He began his ministry in Manangatang. After a term in India as Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in New Delhi and Simla, he returned, now married, to Manangatang. In 1936 he accepted a call to Warragul, and nine years later, then with four sons and a daughter, moved to Noorat in the Western District; and thence to Yarrawonga, Chelsea and finally Mia Mia, from where he retired in 1971.
