SECONDHAND BOOK – EX-LIBRARY
From the Introduction:
Since “The Story of the Mallee” was written by Alfred S. Kenyon, C.E., in 1912, no other book has covered the history of the Mallee as a whole. Many authors have produced “cameos” of particular areas, both geographically and socially. These can provide the reader with an insight of the pleasures and problems experienced by Mallee inhabitants through the years.
However, as the Local History Resource Centre became established with funding from Victoria 150th during 1984, people began to ask for a copy of the history book which they presumed to be the result of our activity.
At that point it appeared that a local history book was rather remote due to a lack of documented information during the formative years of the Mallee settlement. Research of the area promised to be tedious and time-consuming.
Hence, the availability of such a variety of articles from the Argus newspapers became an attractive alternative. This book will give the city-dweller a picture of harsh adversity. The Mallee has weathered many storms, not least of them political, and has shown that courage and determination can defeat all odds.
Many a pioneer can now sit back and remember, fondly, the days when real achievements were a daily occurrence.
