Description
SECOND HAND BOOK
This book traces the history of the Tasmanian tiger, the thylacine, from fossils and early Aboriginal paintings through to the present day. Anatomical details of the animal are given, its behaviour as gleaned from the few written accounts and as told by old-timers is discussed, its persecution from early European settlement through to the 1900s is detailed, and the efforts of various searches are recorded. Tales, written or recounted, and sightings have been collected from around Tasmania and the mainland of Australia.
The tragedy of the Tasmanian tiger is that no one bothered to study it properly when it was plentiful, or to investigate whether it was in fact a menace to pastoralists, and nowadays we know so little about the animal and its ecology that there is little we can do to help rehabilitate the species.
