Description
SECOND HAND BOOK
This book collates the reminiscences and correspondence of William Lockhart Morton (1820-1898), pastoralist, explorer, and inventor. Born at Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1820, he interrupted his engineering studies at the University of Glasgow to migrate to Port Phillip (Victoria) in 1842. He is renowned for inventing the sheep dip for dressing scab in sheep, and the swing gate for drafting sheep. He travelled extensively throughout Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. He has been described as ‘a remarkably well-informed, widely educated, resourceful and observant man, gifted with an inventive turn of mind and quite a flair for poetry. … Farm techniques, animal husbandry, general zoology, botany, geology, meteorology, chemistry, surveying and exploration were all taken in Morton’s stride, and he had more than a smattering of each subject’.
