Yours faithfully Henry Tewsley, from his personal letterbook of the colonial years 1854-1878. By Ally McBride

Henry Tewsley, draper and businessman, settled at the age of 26 in colonial Victoria, Australia and later in Dunedin, New Zealand.  In his letterbook, Henry kept copies of his many letters to family, friends and business colleagues in which he describes, often in intimate detail, his life as a businessman and a settler with a family of 14 children.  He writes of the hard years of economic depression in Victoria before he and his family relocate to Dunedin, where Henry is a resident partner for the softgoods importing firm, Sargood, Son & Ewen.  The firm’s success depends on his good management and all goes well – until the partnership sours…

Henry describes early Dunedin and his active interest in the Congregational Church; the establishment of Dunedin’s Roslyn Town; the politicking surrounding the Otago Harbour Board; and planting his extensive garden.  He is passionate about life as a free-thinking colonial settler, away from the narrow mindset of the Old World.
