SUMMARY:People Power: Petitions in the National Archives
DESCRIPTION:Petitioning government is a fundamental right in Australia’s democracy. This seminar will explore citizen activism through petitions submitted to the Australian Government. The National Archives collection includes a wide range of petitions relating to a number of areas for change including land rights for First Australians\, equal voting rights and the internment of enemy aliens. Not all petitions relate to the big issues\, with some asking for intervention on more local or personal issues. \nThose who attend in person can also visit the National Archives’ Disrupt Persist Invent touring exhibition\, which explores the many ways people have achieved social change in Australia. Disrupt Persist Invent is open at the Victorian Archives Centre from 8 December 2023 to 5 April 2024. See Disrupt\, persist\, invent | naa.gov.au for more details and opening hours. \nThis lecture is one in a series on which the RHSV and National Archives of Australia partner. It is a hybrid event and free-of-charge – you can attend the lecture and the exhibition at the Victorian Archives Centre in North Melbourne or you can join the lecture on Zoom. \nFor those attending by Zoom the Zoom log-in details will be sent 24 hours before the event. You will be sent an automatically-generated email confirming your booking – if this doesn’t appear in your in-box please check your Spam or Junk Mail folders. \nCitation for photograph: NAA: A6180\, 20/11/86/6.

SUMMARY:Off the Drawing Board\, a National Archives of Australia seminar
DESCRIPTION:For History Month\, the National Archives of Australia are partnering once again with the RHSV to present\, Off the Drawing Board\, where members and friends can discover more about the history of their local community through Victorian architectural drawings. \nDid you know that National Archives holds thousands of architectural drawings for public buildings across Australia and Victoria? Dating back as early as 1849\, these drawings document not only famous Melbourne landmarks but also humbler suburban and rural facilities\, such as local post offices and drill halls. This makes these drawings an invaluable resource for anyone researching local history and heritage. Many of the drawings are also beautiful works of art in their own right. \nHYBRID EVENT: For those attending in person at the Victorian Archives Centre\, this talk will be followed by a special tour of the ‘Collective City’ exhibition now on display there. Members and friends can also join the talk via ZOOM. \n

SUMMARY:1000 babies can’t be wrong!
DESCRIPTION:In January 1961\, 50 mothers marched through the Victorian town of Healesville demanding their doctor be reinstated to the local hospital. Their placards declared ‘1000 Babies Can’t Be Wrong’. \nThese mothers were supporting Dr Arthur Deery\, a Hungarian Jewish doctor and a person of interest to Australia’s security services. \nDr Fallon Mody from Melbourne University will present Dr Arthur Deery’s migrant medical life which spanned 40 years. \nFallon’s research highlights how biographical explorations enable more nuanced understandings of being an ‘alien doctor’ in pre and post-war Australia. \nThis event is being held in conjunction with our touring exhibition Spy: espionage in Australia now on at the Victorian Archives Centre in Melbourne until 7 July 2023. \nThe event is a hybrid one – people can either attend in person or join remotely. For those who come in person\, we are offering a tour of the Spy Exhibition too! \nTo book tickets click here: 1000 babies can’t be wrong! | naa.gov.au \nPhoto caption: Dr Arthur Deery and his family\, 1940s. SUMMARY:Exodus from Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany\, many members of Vienna’s vibrant Jewish community sought safe havens overseas to escape growing persecution. Amongst them were Michael and Regine Weiss and their family. Their story\, as told through records held by the National Archives of Australia and other information provided by their descendants\, reveals much about Australia’s attitudes towards Jewish refugees during these dark days. Presented by Patrick Ferry (National Archives of Australia) and Angus Davison (Monash University History student) in conjunction with the Royal Historical Society of Victoria and the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation. \nThis will be a hybrid event. The real-space event will be held at the Victorian Archives Centre\, 99 Shiel Street\, North Melbourne. Those who attend in person can also tour the NAA’s exhibition\, Out of this world: Australia in the space age \nIt will also be available as a Zoom presentation. Once you book a place in this free Zoom event you will be sent an automatic email confirmation. If you don’t receive this confirmation\, please check your Junk Mail or Spam folder as automatic emails often go astray. Then\, 24 hours before the event\, we will send you the necessary Zoom log-in details. \n  \nImage captions: \nThese three images are from the National Archives of Australia’s collection.  \n\nVisa stamps from Michael’s passport\, showing stamps signifying where they were headed (Australia)\, what they were fleeing (Nazi occupied Vienna) and how they got there (via Shanghai). \nMichael and Regine Weiss’ passport photographs
