SUMMARY:CATALOGUING CLINICS 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join Jillian Hiscock\, the RHSV Collections Manager\, each month in this informative and easy-going Zoom forum on all aspects of cataloguing collections for historical societies. \nJillian has a different topic each month and is happy to be guided by those who attend as to what they would like covered in upcoming clinics. Bring your questions (no matter the topic) – this is an interactive space where questions are encouraged. The RHSV does not endorse any particular cataloguing software – we believe it is horses for courses – and Jillian will talk about issues that impact on cataloguing whether you are using cataloguing cards or software. \nThe one-hour clinics are free and the Zoom log-in below is used every month in 2025\, however\, we do ask you to register each month as this enables Jillian to send you extra material / links etc after each session. \n11am (AEDT) Thu 27 Feb 2025 \n11am (AEDT) Thu 27 Mar 2025 \n11am (AEST) Thu 24 Apr 2025 \n11am (AEST) Thu 29 May 2025 \n11am (AEST) Thu 26 Jun 2025 \n11am (AEST) Thu 31 Jul 2025 \n11am (AEST) Thu 28 Aug 2025 \n11am (AEST) Thu 25 Sep 2025 \n11am (AEDT) Thu 30 Oct 2025 \n11am (AEDT) Thu 27 Nov 2025 \nPlease download and import the following iCalendar (.ics) files to your calendar system.\nMonthly: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/tZ0pcOiuqjItH9JWUaZk1ZrdaP1uA9d1Yqc1/ics?icsToken=DESnOhi_USXAWOo5GQAALAAAAOsufSxu9e_o1VvEoUWUiVuOT3wUceY4gYwdUjlaNrGDW1VrT1KjyEhE0aD9QHm4eoEg_M9GmHYiFwIZujAwMDAwMQ&meetingMasterEventId=3FhVroEqTuiqU-ygov-0vg \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89471649756?pwd=Q8GKXnfp3lt6u9ar3tx1YW0HeRmM7V.1 \nMeeting ID: 894 7164 9756\nPasscode: 291255 \nIf joining by phone: \nOne tap mobile\n+61871501149\,\,89471649756#\,\,\,\,*291255# Australia\n+61280156011\,\,89471649756#\,\,\,\,*291255# Australia \n— \nDial by your location\n• +61 8 7150 1149 Australia\n• +61 2 8015 6011 Australia\n• +61 3 7018 2005 Australia\n• +61 7 3185 3730 Australia\n• +61 8 6119 3900 Australia \nMeeting ID: 894 7164 9756\nPasscode: 291255 \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kdoUG5MWlO \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Think Tank: orientation/training programme for young people joining historical societies
DESCRIPTION:Murchison & District Historical Society wants to develop an orientation/training programme for young people – i.e. 14 – 18yo’s – to become volunteers for their historical society. Isn’t that a great idea? If your historical society has any experience in developing or running such a program\, Kay Ball from Murchison would love to hear from you. {murch.hs@outlook.com} \nThe RHSV thinks that this idea is worth putting effort into and seeing if we can develop a template that can be adopted by many historical societies. To facilitate this I’ve organised a Zoom meeting for 11am Tuesday 4 February 2025 for everyone interested to get together and share ideas and experiences and to work out what can be done. So please do join Kay and me on Zoom and bring your ideas and enthusiasm and we’ll see what we can nut out together. \nKay Ball from Murchison says\, “I have 15 x 2 hour sessions in mind (includes morning tea)\, that will be held on Saturdays and then some weekdays during school holidays. Planning on starting with about 8 in the group with two adults mentoring. Our volunteers have backgrounds in teaching\, retail and business management as well as a passion for history so should be a good fit!” \nYour Zoom log-in: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82712545917?pwd=Wm4lFy76mJ8YZ3aY6QGfUrYP7RGhoE.1 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID 827 1254 5917\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPasscode: 469528

SUMMARY:THE DRIVE-IN LANDSCAPE OF THE LUCKY COUNTRY
DESCRIPTION:The National Archives of Australia (NAA) and RHSV are proud to co-present this event with eminent historian\, Professor Graeme Davison. \nProfessor Davison\, in response to the NAA’s current exhibition\, Reception this way: motels – a sentimental journey with Tim Ross | naa.gov.au \, will discuss the motel which was the most popular of a suite of American-inspired innovations that transformed Australia’s towns and suburbs in the 1950s and 60s: the drive-in cinema\, the service station\, the drive-in bottle shop and hotel\, the carport and the drive-in shopping centre. In his book\, The Australian Ugliness\, architect Robin Boyd decried the excesses of what he dubbed ‘Austerica’ but also hoped to civilise the form. Meanwhile ordinary Australians simply enjoyed the new possibilities of travel\, leisure and convenience that the car and the drive-in world offered. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, Reception this way: motels – a sentimental journey with Tim Ross\, which can be seen at the Victorian Archives Centre revisits your memories of the classic Aussie motel\, from family holidays and long road trips to continental breakfasts and mid-century mod-cons. In a land where the car has provided us with the ultimate freedom to hit the road and explore\, it is no surprise that Australians wholeheartedly embraced the American concept of the motel. When motels began springing up in the 1950s\, they represented a new\, stylish and sophisticated way to travel. \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you cannot get to the Victorian Archives Centre\, you could visit the on-line curator’s tour: Curator-talk – Reception this way | naa.gov.au This is based on the exhibition when it was in the NAA’s Canberra office. The touring version of the exhibition in Melbourne is a slightly smaller version due to the size of the gallery. \nPhoto caption: ‘The California Motel\, Hawthorn c. 1964. NAA: B942\, HOTELS – MOTELS & RESTAURANTS [3] [id: 30766249]’ \nHousekeeping \nThis is a Zoom only event however you are more than welcome to visit the exhibition at the Victorian Archives Centre\, 99 Shiel St\, North Melbourne (home to both the NAA and PROV). The exhibition can be accessed Monday to Friday 10am to 4:30pm. \nThe ZOOM log-in details will be sent to all attendees 24hrs before the event. \nAn automatically generated confirmation of booking email is sent on booking – please check your Trash or Spam folders if this email does not turn up in your In-Box. \n\n\n\n This is a History Month event (click here for the full program)

SUMMARY:Rare Book Week: ‘Good price\, reliable recipes\, great photos’
DESCRIPTION:Australian Women’s Weekly cookbooks and their influence on Australian food culture \nSpeaker: Dr Lauren Samuelsson \nThe Australian Women’s Weekly’scookbooks were (and still are) remarkably popular. The Weekly\, Australia’s most popular women’s magazine\, started publishing a range of cookbooks from the late 1930s\, but it was during the 1970s when their cookbooks became incredibly popular. Many of the Weekly’s cookbooks\, whether the Children’s Birthday Cake Book or the Chinese Cooking Class Cookbook\, have become ‘bibles’ in the Australian kitchen. This talk will investigate how these books came to be\, why they were so popular\, and how they helped shape Australia’s food culture. \nPresented by The Old Treasury Building\nThis is a ZOOM online event only\nFriday 19th July\, 11am – 12pm \nClick here to register  \n  \nThis event is part of Rare Book Week.\nYou can access the full program here.

SUMMARY:Zoom lecture: Gardens and land management in Western Victoria
DESCRIPTION:Zoom lecture: Gardens and land management in Western Victoria  \nWinter online zoom lecture by Dr Raymond Madden\, Senior Lecturer\, Anthropologist\, in the School of Social Sciences\, La Trobe University \nJames Dawson\, (1806-1900)\, was a prominent pastoralist in the colonial history of western Victoria.  In 1881 he published\, ‘ Australian Aborigines: The Languages and Customs of Several Tribes of Aborigines in the Western District of Victoria’. This lecture will outline Dawson’s knowledge\, respect and advocacy for Aboriginal people and his appreciation of their land management or ‘gardening’ skills. He was also a good friend of the colonial artist Eugene von Guerard\, who often stayed with Dawson at his properties Kangatong and Wuurong\, on his various sojourns into the western district regions. Dawson was also very aware of the imminent denuding of the Tower Hill landscape\, leading to the commissioning of Guerard to capture it in his famous painting. This ties in with the spring bus trip in November. \n  \nPresented by: Victorian branch – Australian Garden History Society \nCost:  $10 members AGHS\, $10 Friends RBG\, $15 non-members \nWhen: 9th July\, 6pm \nLocation: A Zoom link will be provided with reminder email before the session. \nBook: at https://www.trybooking.com/CRVMG \n

SUMMARY:Making Public Histories: Energy Transitions: Historicising Australia's Nuclear Debate – 5pm (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Australia is in the midst of an energy transition\, but specific policies and decisions around the shift to more renewable forms of energy production\, storage and use have become the subject of heated debate. Historians have an important role to play in this debate\, shedding light on the historical factors that shape ideas and attitudes in the present. How have Australians thought about nuclear energy\, and the extractive processes that underpin it\, over the last seventy years? What cultural attitudes have developed around coal and coal mining in Australia\, and how do they shape attitudes and policy today? And how have we transitioned between energy regimes in the past? \nIn this seminar\, three leading scholars consider how Australia’s past shapes debates about the nation’s contested energy transition today. \nSpeakers: \nAssoc. Prof. Nancy Cushing (University of Newcastle) \nDr Jessica Urwin (La Trobe University/Australian National University) \nDr Matthew Ryan (The Australia Institute) \nThis event will be chaired by Rohan Howitt of Monash University. \nWe thank the series sponsors\, Monash University Publishing\, the Monash University History Program and the Old Treasury Building. \nBookings:  https://www.historycouncilvic.org.au/australia_s_nuclear_debate_mph\nWe will be live tweeting the event from our Twitter/X account @History_Vic with the hashtag #MakingPublicHistories

SUMMARY:WRITING HISTORY GROUP
DESCRIPTION:Dr Cheryl Griffin leads this group which has been meeting since 2020. \nThis group is for people who are tackling writing a history project or two and want a sounding board / source of information / guidance and HELP! Each month from February to November Cheryl convenes the group via Zoom for 90 minutes and they will attack a particular aspect of writing history and also be a sounding board for members problems / queries. Cheryl also has guest writers drop in to talk about their work and how they’ve dealt with thorny issues. \nThis writing group has a cap on the numbers who can join as we don’t want it to get too unwieldy where questions can’t be answered nor feedback given.
Ongoing attendance is encouraged. The group dynamic doesn’t work if you can only drop in to a couple of sessions or you don’t have a current project on which you are working. \nSo\, if you are a newcomer and are interested in joining\, please RSVP for the Feb session and we’ll let you know if we have reached the limit of the group or not. \n\nTue 28 Feb\, 2023 11:30 – 1pm AEDT\nTue 28 Mar\, 2023 11:30 – 1pm AEDT\nTue 18 Apr\, 2023 11:30 – 1pm AEST (a week early to avoid Anzac Day)\nTue 23 May\, 2023 11:30 – 1pm AEST\nTue 27 Jun\, 2023 11:30- 1pm AEST\nTue 25 Jul\, 2023 11:30- 1pm AEST\nTue 22 Aug\, 2023 11:30- 1pm AEST\nTue 26 Sep\, 2023 11:30- 1pm AEST\nTue 24 Oct\, 2023 11:30 – 1pm AEDT\nTue 28 Nov\, 2023 11:30 – 1pm AEDT\nPlease download and import the following iCalendar (.ics) files to your calendar system.\nMonthly: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/tZAkcO-rpjgjE9xC-Djyq2jCCSkdiwv1SZNl/ics?icsToken=98tyKuGspzwsGdyWuRCPRpwIHY_CM-nxiHZEj_pFv1LBCTlCMAnVFdFJNrtoBonjJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84976383998?pwd=T3ZmRGplWjY0SmI4M1hEQVBkQ0JnQT09Meeting ID: 849 7638 3998\nPasscode: 634475

SUMMARY:ZOOM CONVERSATION WITH GRAEME DAVISON ABOUT MY GRANDFATHER'S CLOCK
DESCRIPTION:The RHSV is delighted to co-host with the Genealogical Society of Victoria this ZOOM conversation with Emeritus Professor Graeme Davison AO about his latest book\, My Grandfather’s Clock. \nA great-aunt’s bequest – a 200-year-old grandfather clock – sends historian Graeme Davison on a journey deep into his father’s family’s past. From their tribal homeland in the Scottish Borders he follows them to the garrison town of Carlisle\, from industrial Birmingham to Edwardian Australia\, and from the Great War to his own suburban childhood. This is the story of an ordinary family’s journey from frontier warfare and dispossession through economic turmoil and emigration to modest prosperity. At each step\, we are led to reflect on the puzzles of personal identity and the mystery of time. Based on a lifetime of creative scholarship\, My Grandfather’s Clock is a moving testament to the power of family history to illuminate the present. \nGraeme Davison was born in Melbourne and educated at the universities of Melbourne and Oxford\, where he was a Rhodes Scholar\, and at the Australian National University. He has taught at the University of Melbourne and from 1982 to 2005 was Professor of History at Monash University. He has held visiting appointments at Harvard\, Edinburgh\, ANU\, Tübingen and King’s College\, London. His books include The Rise and Fall of Marvellous Melbourne (1978 and 2004)\, The Unforgiving Minute: How Australia Learned to Tell the Time (1994)\, The Use and Abuse of Australian  History (2000)\, Car Wars: How the Car Won Our Hearts and Conquered our Cities (2004) and University Unlimited: The Monash Story (2012) (with Kate Murphy). He was also a co-editor of The Oxford Companion to Australian History. His most recent publications are Lost Relations: Fortunes of My Family in Australia’s Golden Age (2015)\, Trendyville: The Battle for Australia’s Inner Cities (2015) (with Renate Howe and David Nichols) and City Dreamers: The Urban Imagination in Australia (2016). He is a former President of the Australian Historical Association\, Chairman of the Heritage Council of Victoria\, a Fellow of the Australian Academies of Social Sciences and Humanities\, and a prominent advisor and commentator on museums\, heritage and urban policy. In 2011 he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia. \nGraeme’s book will be published on the 5 September\, pre-orders taken now on the RHSV bookshop website. \nThe ZOOM log-in details will be sent to registrants 24 hours before the event.
