SUMMARY:The Rise and Fall of the Iron Bridge
DESCRIPTION:In June we are thrilled that Miles Lewis will be returning to the RHSV\, in partnership with Engineering Heritage Victoria to talk about Iron Bridges. \nThe earliest cast iron bridges imitated those in timber or stone\, because there was no established idea of what an iron bridge should be like\, and most of them were simple arches. But over the next century wrought iron\, and then steel\, became important bridge-building materials.  The arch bridge was joined by the suspension bridge\, the box girder\, the parallel-chorded girder\, and even more elaborate forms.  And bridges fabricated in Europe were sent across the world to places like Latin America\, Japan\, and India.  Exported bridges faced special problems – the cost and difficulty of transporting the components\, the lack of skilled labour at the site\, and unexpected foundation problems and hydrological conditions. These prefabricated bridges will be the main focus of the presentation. \nMiles Lewis\, AM FAHA\, is an architectural historian specialising in the interaction between technology and culture in areas such as vernacular architecture and prefabrication\, and in technical innovation generally.  He edited the international text Architectura\, and has this year published a book\, Architectural Drawings: Collecting in Australia.  He is an emeritus professor of the University of Melbourne\, and currently a member of the Portable Buildings World Heritage Nomination Task Force.

SUMMARY:The Edwardian Garden - golden and delicious: Special online lecture by Caroline Holmes.
DESCRIPTION:The Edwardian Garden – golden and delicious:  Special online lecture by renowned UK Garden Historian\, Caroline Holmes. \nGardens of a golden afternoon are glimpsed in black and white photographs and nostalgic cottage paintings. The Mediterranean inspired the architecture of Harold Peto’s designs and the colours in Gertrude Jekyll’s early paintings and later plantings. Peto’s richest client was Daisy\, Countess of Warwick\, for whom he designed in the grand Italianate manner at Warwick House. Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens collaborated in 70 projects creating the Surrey Style as showcased in the architecture and gardens of her former home\, Munstead Wood. Not just Surrey\, their influences inspired the country house and garden style across the world whilst echoing the need to understand local practicalities. The kitchen garden inspired visual and edible feasts in the ground and on the plates of contemporary gardening books. Jekyll wrote many gardening books which were published across the world in English speaking countries\, her attention to drifting colours in flower borders came to represent the quintessential ‘Edwardian’ garden. Her travels in North Africa inspired her designs for rock gardens as can be glimpsed in photographs of Frederick McCubbin’s Fontainebleau garden on Mount Macedon. We will also look at paintings by Rupert Bunny\, E. Phillips Fox and John Peter Russell that evoke the colour and sensation of their pre-World War One world. \nDATE:              Thursday 30 June 2022 \nTIME:               6.00 start – log in from 5.45 \nLOCATION      A Zoom link will be provided with reminder email before each session. \nCOST:              $12 members\, $15 non-members \nBOOKINGS:     https://www.trybooking.com/BZGVX \nENQUIRIES:     WENDY DWYER Mobile: 0408 340 967 \nCaroline Holmes is a highly respected Garden Historian\, author of 12 books including ‘Water Lilies and Bory Latour-Marliac\, the genius behind Monet’s water lilies’ launched in Giverny in 2016. She was keynote speaker at the International Water Gardens Conference held at Giverny in 2019. Course Director for University of Cambridge ICE\, accredited lecturer for The Arts Society and has spoken on every continent except Antarctica. Her design consultancies range from Human Renaissance gardens surrounding Notre Dame-de-Calais to devising the planting for The Poison Garden within The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland. Academic but not dry\, she likes to sift the humour from the humus. In addition\, she is now chairing an RHS panel to assign ‘Award of Garden Merit’ to hardy water lilies. www.horti-history.com

SUMMARY:Australia's Great Depression
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled that Joan Beaumont\, Professor Emerita of History at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre\, Australian National University\, will deliver our July lecture on her profound history of Australia’s Great Depression. \nBeaumont says\, ‘The pandemic has much common with the Great Depression. Australians today have confronted external threats\, that neither they nor their governments could control. Everyone has had to dig deep for resilience. The pandemic like the Depression confirmed how important local and state loyalties are. Voters expected their leaders to protect them\, and only them. However\, there was one major difference in contrast to the Depression: today’s governments utilised sophisticated policy tools\, well beyond the imagination of the Depression-era governments\, to prevent the social disaster on the scale seen in 1929 – 1932.’How a nation shattered by the Great War survived the worst economic crisis it has ever faced.” \nSome generations are born unlucky. Australians who survived the horrors of the Great War and the Spanish flu epidemic that followed were soon faced with the shock of the Great Depression. Today we remember long dole queues\, shanty towns and destitute men roaming the country in search of work. With over a third of the workforce unemployed in 1932\, Australia was one of the hardest hit countries in the world. Yet this is not the complete story. In this wide-ranging account of the Great Depression in Australia\, Joan Beaumont shows how high levels of debt and the collapse of wool and wheat prices left Australia particularly exposed in the world’s worst depression. Threatened with national insolvency\, and with little room for policy innovation\, governments resorted to austerity and deflation. Violent protests erupted in the streets and paramilitary movements threatened the political order. It might have ended very differently\, but Australia’s democratic institutions survived the ordeal. Australia’s people\, too\, survived. While many endured great hardship\, anger\, anxiety and despair\, most ‘made do’ and helped each other. Some even found something positive in the memory of this personal and communal struggle. Australia’s Great Depression details this most impressive narrative of resilience in the nation’s history. \nJoan Beaumont is also the author of the magisterial account of Australia’s experience of World War I\, Broken Nation which\, among other awards\, won the 2014 Prime Minister’s History Award. \nBuying the book \nWhen you purchase a ticket to this event you will be given a code which will give you a $10 discount when you purchase a copy of Australia’s Great Depression from the RHSV bookshop. \nBuying a ticket \nWhen you purchase tickets to this event you will be sent an automatic email confirmation – if you don’t get this email please check your Junk Mail or Spam Mail folder as automatic emails often go astray and fall foul of ISP’s security settings. \nIf you are attending via Zoom we will send the Zoom log-in details 24 hours before the event. Once again\, remember to check your Junk or Spam in-boxes. \n‘Beaumont’s brilliant study is the comprehensive history of the Great Depression that we have been waiting for.’ Professor Stephen Garton AM\, The University of Sydney \n‘A magisterial account of an immense tragedy\, told with authority\, poignancy and drama.’ Frank Bongiorno\, Professor of History\, The Australian National University \n‘A masterpiece by one of Australia’s most esteemed historians.’ David Day\, historian

SUMMARY:Cataloguing Clinics 2022
DESCRIPTION:Jillian Hiscock\, the RHSV Collections Manager\, started these free cataloguing clinics during the early days of COVID and they suit Zoom very well. The clinics run for an hour from 11am – 12noon on the 4th Thursday of each month. It is a relaxed gathering of people who are finding their way through the intricacies of cataloguing material in historical collections which\, as we all know\, fall between a library and a museum with sometimes a bit of art gallery thrown in.  With our membership scattered across Australia please remember that this is Melbourne time – AEDT in summer and AEST in winter. \nJillian always prepares some material on some specific queries but questions are encouraged and\, remember\, a problem shared is a problem halved. The clinics are conversational in format rather than a seminar. If you are new to cataloguing\, or an old hand\, you will find plenty to interest you in these sessions. Jillian often has material which is emailed out to attendees after the clinic. \nThe remaining clinics in 2022 will be held (via Zoom) on: \n\n        Jul 28\, 2022 11:00 AM (how RHSV uses eHive cataloguing system)\n        Aug 25\, 2022 11:00 AM\n        Sep 22\, 2022 11:00 AM\n        Oct 27\, 2022 11:00 AM\n        Nov 24\, 2022 11:00 AM\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85662066892?pwd=L2REVUhtZmtHblM0ZjV0ZDNxN3FkUT09 \nMeeting ID: 856 6206 6892 \nPasscode: 227214 \nAlthough\, we provide the Zoom details above\, please do remember to register otherwise we cannot email you material after the event.

SUMMARY:OPEN HOUSE MELBOURNE
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 31st of July\, as part of Open House Melbourne\, we will be offering free guided tours of the Australian Army Medical Corps Drill Hall which is now home to the RHSV and several performing arts companies. \nIn light of the upsurge in COVID cases we ask that everyone taking a tour wears a mask. We will have masks available if people forget. This is an OH&S decision by the RHSV Council to protect our staff and volunteers in their workplace.  \nOur wonderful building is an art deco masterpiece built in 1938 as Australia and the rest of the world readied themselves for another world war. \nFrom 10am until 4pm we will be offering guided tours every 30 minutes (starting at 10am\, 10:30am etc). We will also have tea/coffee on tap for those of you rushing around on a tight schedule. \n\n\n\n\nThe featured materials in this late 1930s art deco building are high quality brick and plaster work with strong vertical and horizontal lines\, fluted pilasters\, arches\, keystones\, coffered ceilings\, built-in seats and Dutch (or stable) doors. Many of the original features are still in place. \nFunctional and utilitarian\, the building has two large drill halls with offices along their northern side. The halls are separated by a public entrance foyer which leads off A’Beckett Street. Messes are placed at the centre – for sergeants – and at the east and west ends of the building – for ‘other ranks’ and officers respectively. \nThe drill hall had a number of functions: as an indoor parade ground for marching and equipment drill; a gymnasium and for physical training; a social centre offering activities such as dances\, film nights etc\, and for displays. The mezzanine (the ceiling of a row of offices) allows for observation of the activities on the floor of the hall. The ceiling design itself is reminiscent of suburban cinemas of the time. \nBy 1990 the Army Medical Corps Drill Hall had been added to the Historic Building register for its state-wide architectural and historical significance. The western end of the building became the premises of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria in August 1999. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBookings are not necessary. Tours are limited to 12 persons and\, if needed\, we’ll have more than one tour embarking at the same time.

SUMMARY:Celebrating 150 Years of State Schooling in Victoria
DESCRIPTION:It is Family History Month at Yarra Plenty Regional Library. \nThe 150th anniversary of State Schooling in Victoria provides fresh opportunities for family\, school and local historians. \nSome type of ‘formal schooling’ has played part in most families’ and local communities’ lives\, particularly in recent times. The Education Act of 1872 (Victoria) was the first of its kind in the world\, offering free\, compulsory and secular education to Victoria’s children aged 6-15 years old. Although there have been exceptions since ‘day one’\, the anniversary ‘spotlights’ resources and approaches\, both old and new\, for writing richer family and local histories. \nDr Rosalie Triolo will share snapshots of both as relevant to family historians\, referencing also her research on Education Department schools and their families in World War I as part of our Family History Month program this August. \nDr Rosalie Triolo is a senior lecturer at Monash University and writes and presents widely in History Education and history of Australian education. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria\, Immediate Past President of the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria\, a Life Member and awardee for Outstanding Service\, and currently an elected HTAV Director. She is a Past- Vice-President of the History Teachers’ Association of Australia and formerly its delegate to the Australian Historical Association; currently an elected councillor of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria; and\, invited as Victoria’s representative to the council of the Australian National Museum of Education. \nWatsonia Library\, 4-6 Ibbottson Street\, Watsonia \nImage: Kangaroo Ground School\, 5th and 6th Classes 1890s. SUMMARY:'Re-Living the Early Days': Memory\, childhood and self-indigenisation in Hotham/North Melbourne.
DESCRIPTION:This talk will analyse an archive of letters\, written in 1934–5 during the centenary celebrations of Melbourne\, by adults who were children in the 1860s and 70s in Hotham. Through these letters we can uncover a narrative of self-indigenisation of the settler residents\, that is their positioning of white colonial-born children of Hotham as natural inhabitants of the area. \nSeveral themes in the letters evidence this narrative: conquering the space through play; local personalities positioned in the settler space; pride in key colonial moments; positioning First Nations people as wandering fringe-dwellers; and claims of colonial childhood as ‘original’ or ‘native’ to the area. \nThis talk offers the opportunity to engage with an appreciation of how the literal and symbolic building of Hotham/North Melbourne was/is embedded in the attempted erasure of its Traditional Owners.

SUMMARY:The Emperor Gold Mine\, Fiji\, by Lee Spencer
DESCRIPTION:An invitation from The Australasian Mining History Association to join in their next ZOOM talk. \n\nThe Emperor Gold Mine\, Fiji: Mines on and off since 1932 and continues to show the colour of gold\, remaining one of the world long continuous mining areas. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Emperor Gold Mine in Fiji is one of the worlds largest epithermal gold deposits with an active operational history extending over 80 years and thus one of the worlds longest lived gold mines. \nThe Mine was discovered by prospectors who undertook arduous exploration over a number of years culminating in the discovery of payable gold in 1932. There followed Australian venture capitalists\, a stock market boom for Fijian gold stocks with the inevitable crash and subsequent development into one of the worlds premier gold mines. \nChallenges had to be overcome before this lofty point was achieved\, these included the unique geology\, telluride metallurgy and an untrained work force all within a country emerging from their colonial past. The Emperor Gold Mine is now undergoing a revival with new shareholders and investment in ageing infrastructure against a backdrop of robust gold prices and increasing mining reserves. \n\n\n\n\nYou can pass this onto friends and associates who may have an interest in mining history. \nIf you have any information\, photos\, artefacts or an association with the Emperor Gold Mine you will have the opportunity to present your association in the Q&A session. \nPlease register if you want to talk in the Q&A to ensure you will have a turn. \nTO REGISTER YOUR ATTENDANCE\nThe event is promoted internationally through this Eventbrite link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/the-emperor-gold-mine-fiji-tickets-388992255307 \nJoin Zoom meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85474250625?pwd=Y1FnTXJMZDcwSzNLTGkvRzYxWE1idz09 \nMeeting ID: 854 7425 0625 \nPasscode: 527069 \n  \nPS: The 26th AMHA Conference will be held face-to-face in Burra\, South Australia from 18-25 September 2022 \nFor more information\, visit the AMHA website

SUMMARY:Eltham Historical Society meeting: Photographs of John Henry (Harry) Clark
DESCRIPTION:A prominent photographer in the early days of Eltham was John Henry (Harry) Clark. At the regular Eltham & District Historical Society meeting in August they will explore some selected Clark images from the collection and\, with some\, try to show the current locations where the photographs were taken. \nAs always\, Society members and visitors are most welcome to attend this meeting\, to be held in the Eltham Senior Citizens’ Centre\, Library Place\, Eltham. \n  \nFrom the Eltham & District Historical Society Newsletter \nJ.H.Clark – photographer by Peter Pidgeon\nJohn Henry (Harry) Clark born 1877 was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). Following William’s death that same year\, Maria formed a relationship with Robert Conley who took on her young family and another son\, Robert Conley Jnr\, was born 1880. Maria and Robert married in 1885. \nJohn and his brothers\, William Charles Clark (1872-1945)\, Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street\, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914.\nFollowing the death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914\, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved\, the premises demolished with a new house under construction by 1915. \nJohn appears to have set up business independently in 1914 operating from 29 Moor Street\, Fitzroy where he was registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. It is understood he boarded with widow Mrs Thekla Jarrold with whom he may have taken rooms during earlier visits since 1910. \nAround 1930 John changed professions from Photographer to Bootmaker. He became well regarded as a leather worker of expertise who also crafted horse harnesses. He opened a small bootmaker’s shop built by Thekla Jarrold on her property\, near the pond at the bottom of the hill. \nJohn never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop\, maintaining a close relationship with Thekla until her death in 1943. His bootmaker’s shop remains today beside the White Cloud cottage and is one of only three remaining shops in the Little Eltham area from the early 20th century.
