SUMMARY:The Priory in the United States and the Establishment of the St John Volunteer Corps
DESCRIPTION:This is the first lecture in 2023 for the St John Ambulance Historical Society (Vic). \nThe paper will be delivered by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Richard Southby. \n\n\n\nToday the Order of St John is an international family of charities whose mission is to lead globally in First Aid and medical responses to community healthcare needs. The Order accomplishes its mission with the support of its 11 Priories and over 30 associations\, 21\,000 members worldwide and 250\,000 dedicated volunteers operating in more than 30 countries. The Order encompasses the foundations of St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group (SJEHG) and St John Ambulance. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Richard Southby began his journey in public health in his native Australia\, where he had originally planned to go into hospital administration at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne\, Victoria.  His career path\, however\, changed course when he attended Cornell University for his master’s degree.  He saw his future in the emerging field of health policy and developed a passion for putting more emphasis on public health on his return to Australia. \nAfter receiving his doctoral degree in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University in Australia\, and holding teaching and research positions at Monash University and The University of Sydney\, and being a full-time commissioner on the Australian Hospitals and Health Services Commission\, he continued his career at the George Washington University when he joined the faculty in 1979.  He held numerous faculty and administrative positions\, including executive dean and distinguished professor of global health in the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Health Affairs at the GW Medical Center; chair of the Department of Health Services Management and Policy; Foundation Gordon A. Friesen Professor of International Health; and the Walter G. Ross Professor of International Health\, among others. He continues his involvement at GW as chair of the dean’s council\, College of Professional Studies; founding director and senior adviser to the Police Science Program; and academic representative to the NROTC Unit. He is also senior adviser to the Army ROTC Battalion at Georgetown University. SUMMARY:Indigenous Sovereignty and Anti-Carceral Activism
DESCRIPTION:This panel discussion\, featuring strong First Nations people speaking about their work and experience in anti-carceral activism\, will be chaired by Amangu Yamatji scholar and community organiser\, Dr Crystal McKinnon. This unique event is the final in the Critical Issues seminar series for 2022 (hosted by the School of Social and Political Sciences)\, and the opening event of the 5th International Conference for Carceral Geography (hosted by Criminology at the University of Melbourne). For Indigenous peoples subject to historic\, contemporary and continuing dispossession\, violence and control under various institutional guises of ‘protection’ and ‘care’\, settler colonialism is an ongoing experience of confinement\, in and of their own Country. The panellists will share insights about ongoing Indigenous activism and abolitionist resistance driven to challenge\, dismantle and transform institutional injustice in order to achieve self-determination and freedom in and for First Nations communities. \n  \nTime and Venue\nSmoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country: 5.15 pm – 5.30 pm at Professional Walk outside the Arts West Building\, University of Melbourne\nDijrri Djirri Surundjeri women’s dance group: 5.30 pm – 5.45 pm at the Foyer of Arts West Building\nPanel and Q&A: 5.50 pm – 7.15 pm at the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Theatre (B101)\nReception: from 7.15 pm at the Foyer of Arts West Building \n

SUMMARY:Bass Valley Historical Society talk on Euphemia Henderson\, wildflower artist and botanist
DESCRIPTION:Bass Valley Historical Society Afternoon Tea meeting on Sunday\, December 4 2022 at 2.00pm. Guest speaker is Maureen Matthews on Euphemia Henderson (1822-1907)\, wildflower artist and botanist. \nWhere: Corinella Public Hall\, Smythe Street.  Cost: $10. Please bring a plate. \nRSVP – Libby Skidmore – 5678 0339 or eskidmore@dcsi.net.au \nEuphemia was briefly engaged to Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller (1825-1896)\, and worked with him on Phillip Island. In 1863\, Ferdinand von Mueller\, the director of Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens\, fell deeply in love with Euphemia\, and proposed marriage to her. The distinguished botanist and the talented Scottish girl who loved studying and sketching plants seemed made for each other. She saved his letters to her and we read his salutation\, ”Beloved bride.” They read the poetry of Lord Byron together on Phillip Island. Mueller referred to her proudly as ”my fiancee\, a greatly talented and enlightened Scottish lady”. \n\n\n\nThen their relationship fell apart. In April 1863\, he was writing to ”my beloved” but by August the same year his letter began coldly\, ”My dear Miss Henderson”\, and he was attempting to explain why he had broken off the engagement. Was it his health problems or did he become aware that Henderson was too old to bear children? \n\n\n\n\nNeither of them ever married but Mueller had several other romances. After the end of their brief affair\, they continued writing occasional letters to each other.  Henderson’s paintings reveal her artistic and scientific talents. Maxwell & Williams\, in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens\, has produced a beautiful collection of crockery showcasing Euphemia’s work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH & FILM SCREENING BALLARAT
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a premiere film screening\, book launch\, digital map debut and panel discussion about a surprising and forgotten aspect of Australian history – the enthralling history of the rescues of thousands of colonists by Aboriginal people from life-threatening situations such as bush fires\, floods\, shipwrecks and being lost in the bush. \nAward-winning author Associate Professor (Dr) Fred Cahir discusses his latest book They Rescued Us! Aboriginal Heroes on Country with filmmakers Lucinda Horrocks and Jary Nemo of Wind & Sky Productions\, whose new film Acts of Heroism will be screened on the day. \nThis short film is a companion to a web-based education portal Aboriginal Heroes of Fire\, Food and Flood which spatially maps locations and documented instances of Aboriginal heroism to do with fire\, flood and food in Victoria and Southeastern Australia from the 1800s to the 1930s. \nProfessor Andrew Gunstone\, the inaugural Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Reconciliation at Federation University will contribute to the discussion which will be moderated by Lucy Bracey from Way Back When\, a group of professional historians who work with communities to tell their stories. The afternoon will include a performance by First Nations composer and singer Deb Lowah Clark. \nThis event complements the Gallery exhibition Beating About The Bush in its critical questioning of the stories Australians have been told about the bush and who it is that Australians regard as pioneers and heroes. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the launch. \nThey Rescued Us! Aboriginal Heroes on Country is published by Ballarat Heritage Services. Acts of Heroism was funded by the Telematics Trust and is a collaboration between Federation University historians\, the Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation (CeRDI) at Federation University and Wind & Sky Productions. The film was produced in Ballarat\, in regional Victoria\, on Wadawurrung Country. \nAge: All ages \nTickets: Free entry but bookings are essential as numbers are strictly limited

SUMMARY:Talk – Ornamental Cast Iron Lace
DESCRIPTION:Hotham History Project invites you to a talk on Ornamental Cast Iron Lace – by Robin Vowels. \nIn the 1860s and 70s one of Hotham’s mayors\, William Hutchison\, operated a foundry in Little Bourke Street where he made some of the ornamental iron lace that still graces houses around North and West Melbourne today. \nAlthough he was well known at the time Hutchison’s work does not carry a maker’s name so Robin Vowels from RMIT decided to work out (if he could) which pieces were from Hutchison’s foundry. \nCome and hear what clues he used and what he found out.

SUMMARY:What is a Drill Hall?
DESCRIPTION:Recently the RHSV took part in Open House Melbourne which concentrated our minds on the history and architecture of our home\, the Australian Army Medical Corps Drill Hall which was built\, like so many others in 1938 in the build-up to WWII. The building’s history\, its original purpose and its architecture are inextricably linked.  And who better to explain those connections than Mike O’Brien? Mike will be addressing Drill Halls in general – what is drill? what happens in drill halls? \nMike is a committed community activist and a believer in a fair go. He is an experienced manager and company director\, has run an iconic Melbourne antiquarian bookstore for 17 years and is an advocate for small business as the main engine that drives our economy. He had an extensive military career but balanced it with directorships of a listed company and a non-bank financial institution. He has tertiary qualifications in Science and Management. He has lectured around the world on cruise ships for 10 years gaining an enviable number of days at sea\, an excellent remedy for a former Infantryman. He writes local history and believes our built heritage should be highly valued. \nThis lecture will be live at the RHSV and also offered on ZOOM. \nCome along and enjoy some Christmas cheer as this is our last in person event for the year. Like all RHSV lectures we will have refreshments (with a Christmas theme) from 5:30pm until 6pm when the lecture will commence. The Zoom audience will log-in at 6pm.

SUMMARY:What Ship Did You Come Out On?
DESCRIPTION:Discover the history of ships in Port Melbourne with local author Nick Cree. \nNick Cree will be speaking about the ships that came through Port Melbourne in the 50’s and 60’s\, and the myriad of personal stories of the people who embarked in Melbourne. Do you have a personal association with one of those ships? \nThis event is part of the exhibition Remarkable: stories of Australians and their boats. \nAustralia’s history is full of maritime-related stories. SUMMARY:Refugee Lives\, Memories and Communities. History Council\, Making Public Histories lecture.
DESCRIPTION:The History Council of Victoria invite you to join them for the final Making Public Histories of 2022 as Associate Professor Ruth Balint\, Ms Chi Vu and Associate Professor Shameran Slewa-Younan share personal stories as well as their research and work in different refugee contexts and cultures. \n  \nRuth Balint \n‘Borders and the Family’ \nWhen my grandparents arrived in Australia in 1938\, they immediately started to try and bring out other Jewish family members trapped in Eastern Europe as World War Two began. In researching this family story\, I began to see a wider history of resistance by Jewish families separated by war and borders. This talk will consider these experiences of the refugee family in Australia’s recent past.  \nChi Vu \n‘This language is beginning to invent another me’ \nChi Vu takes in her background as a child refugee from Vietnam to discuss how her creative writing seeks to address themes of diaspora\, fragmented memories and narratives which are dispersed across languages. Drawing on the fields of sociolinguistics and translingual literary studies\, Vu proposes that her theatre and prose works are necessarily scattered across art forms\, genres\, as well as her two languages – English and Vietnamese.  \nShameran Slewa-Younan \n‘Mental health promotion for refugee and other culturally and/or linguistically diverse migrant populations: Lessons from the field’ \nWorking within a community as diverse as south western Sydney requires undertaking a community driven and engaged clinical and research agenda. Shameran will begin by introducing herself and her own cultural background. She will then move onto discussing the synergy between her clinical and research activities and how it has helped inform mental health service policy and stigma campaigns for culturally and linguistically diverse communities at a state and national level.  \nHCV Board Member Professor Nathalie Nguyen will host the evening and HCV Executive Officer Alicia Cerreto will facilitate the Q&A. \nFree and online\, bookings required: https://www.historycouncilvic.org.au/refugee_lives  \nThis seminar is part of an ongoing series\, Making Public Histories\, that is offered jointly by the Monash University History Program\, the History Council of Victoria and the Old Treasury Building. Each seminar aims to explore issues and approaches in making public histories. The seminars are open\, free of charge\, to anyone interested in the creation and impact of history in contemporary society. Click HERE to learn about other events in the series. \nThe History Council of Victoria thanks the series sponsors\, Monash University Publishing\, the Monash University History Program and the Old Treasury Building. \n  \nThe History Council of Victoria looks forward to seeing you at this event and welcome you forwarding this email to your friends and networks.

SUMMARY:Cataloguing Clinic - last one for 2022
DESCRIPTION:Jillian Hiscock\, the RHSV Collections Manager\, started these free cataloguing clinics during the early days of COVID and they suit Zoom very well. The clinics run for an hour from 11am – 12noon on the 4th Thursday of each month. It is a relaxed gathering of people who are finding their way through the intricacies of cataloguing material in historical collections which\, as we all know\, fall between a library and a museum with sometimes a bit of art gallery thrown in.  With our membership scattered across Australia please remember that this is Melbourne time – AEDT in summer and AEST in winter. \nJillian always prepares some material on some specific queries but questions are encouraged and\, remember\, a problem shared is a problem halved. The clinics are conversational in format rather than a seminar. If you are new to cataloguing\, or an old hand\, you will find plenty to interest you in these sessions. Jillian often has material which is emailed out to attendees after the clinic. \nThe last clinic in 2022 will be held (via Zoom) on: \n\n        Nov 24\, 2022 11:00 AM\n\nThe topic for Nov 24th will be “Cataloguing Postcards”   \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85662066892?pwd=L2REVUhtZmtHblM0ZjV0ZDNxN3FkUT09 \nMeeting ID: 856 6206 6892 \nPasscode: 227214 \nAlthough\, we provide the Zoom details above\, please do remember to register otherwise we cannot email you material after the event. \nWe plan to start these clinics again in February 2023.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Westgate Park with Lyn Allison
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour of Westgate Park with Lyn Allison \nSunday 20th November 10.00 am to 12.00 pm \nOrganised by Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society Inc \nDo join our walking tour of Westgate Park with Lyn Allison. The community bus will leave from the Port Melbourne Town Hall at 9.30 am and will return at 12.30 pm.  If you would prefer to meet us at the main carpark at the entrance to the park at 10.00 am.  BYO water\, hat\, waterproof gear if needed. \nWhether you are taking the community bus\, or meeting at the Park\, please let George Tsingos know to help the outing run smoothly \nsecretary@pmhps.org.au \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWestgate Park is a green oasis located in the heart of industrial Melbourne. The park is perhaps best known for its salt lake which turns pink seasonally in response to high salt levels\, high temperatures\, increased sunlight and lack of rainfall. Visit during the hotter weather to see the reddish algae growing in the salt crust. The lake returns to its normal colour as the weather cools and rainfall increases. \nThe shared paths in Westgate Park are popular with cyclists\, joggers and walkers\, and connect to some significant trail networks of Melbourne\, including the 53km Bay Trail. The trail starts in Westgate Park at the Yarra River and heads all the way to Frankston\, along the eastern edge of Port Phillip Bay\, and is about 2.5 hours by bike\, each way. Travel via the bicycle punt service across the Yarra River (westgatepunt.com for timetable) to access Scienceworks and the Williamstown Foreshore Trail (6km\, 23 minutes one way). \nTake the unsealed trails in Westgate Park that wind past lakes and wetlands to see the park’s plants and animals\, as well as the Earth Series Sculptures. These artworks by Lyn Moore are made from natural materials and add to the unique landscape and character of Westgate Park. Pack a picnic or make use of the free shared electric barbecue facility and come and explore this beautiful environment at the city’s doorstep. \nWestgate Park forms a sanctuary for a variety of bird species from around the world. Watch the lake for wading birds such as stilts\, ibis and spoonbills feeding on the shores\, and swimmers and divers including ducks\, gulls\, coots\, pelicans\, swans and moorhens.
