SUMMARY:What Ship Did You Come Out On?
DESCRIPTION:Discover the history of ships in Port Melbourne with local author Nick Cree. \nNick Cree will be speaking about the ships that came through Port Melbourne in the 50’s and 60’s\, and the myriad of personal stories of the people who embarked in Melbourne. Do you have a personal association with one of those ships? \nThis event is part of the exhibition Remarkable: stories of Australians and their boats. \nAustralia’s history is full of maritime-related stories. With over 1\,000 rivers and a coast that stretches for more than 36\,000 kilometres\, it is no surprise that Australia abounds with stories of people who have lived and worked on the water. This exhibition presents some of those stories\, exploring the remarkable connections between people and their boats. \nThe exhibition will be at the following libraries: \nEltham Library – 14 November 2022 to 14 December 2022 \nLalor Library – 19 December 2022 to 29 January 2023 \nWatsonia Library – 12 December 2022 to 29 January 2022 \nInage: Pixabay \nPresented by Yarra Plenty Regional Library

SUMMARY:Refugee Lives\, Memories and Communities. History Council\, Making Public Histories lecture.
DESCRIPTION:The History Council of Victoria invite you to join them for the final Making Public Histories of 2022 as Associate Professor Ruth Balint\, Ms Chi Vu and Associate Professor Shameran Slewa-Younan share personal stories as well as their research and work in different refugee contexts and cultures. \n  \nRuth Balint \n‘Borders and the Family’ \nWhen my grandparents arrived in Australia in 1938\, they immediately started to try and bring out other Jewish family members trapped in Eastern Europe as World War Two began. In researching this family story\, I began to see a wider history of resistance by Jewish families separated by war and borders. This talk will consider these experiences of the refugee family in Australia’s recent past.  \nChi Vu \n‘This language is beginning to invent another me’ \nChi Vu takes in her background as a child refugee from Vietnam to discuss how her creative writing seeks to address themes of diaspora\, fragmented memories and narratives which are dispersed across languages. Drawing on the fields of sociolinguistics and translingual literary studies\, Vu proposes that her theatre and prose works are necessarily scattered across art forms\, genres\, as well as her two languages – English and Vietnamese.  \nShameran Slewa-Younan \n‘Mental health promotion for refugee and other culturally and/or linguistically diverse migrant populations: Lessons from the field’ \nWorking within a community as diverse as south western Sydney requires undertaking a community driven and engaged clinical and research agenda. Shameran will begin by introducing herself and her own cultural background. She will then move onto discussing the synergy between her clinical and research activities and how it has helped inform mental health service policy and stigma campaigns for culturally and linguistically diverse communities at a state and national level.  \nHCV Board Member Professor Nathalie Nguyen will host the evening and HCV Executive Officer Alicia Cerreto will facilitate the Q&A. \nFree and online\, bookings required: https://www.historycouncilvic.org.au/refugee_lives  \nThis seminar is part of an ongoing series\, Making Public Histories\, that is offered jointly by the Monash University History Program\, the History Council of Victoria and the Old Treasury Building. Each seminar aims to explore issues and approaches in making public histories. The seminars are open\, free of charge\, to anyone interested in the creation and impact of history in contemporary society. Click HERE to learn about other events in the series. \nThe History Council of Victoria thanks the series sponsors\, Monash University Publishing\, the Monash University History Program and the Old Treasury Building. \n  \nThe History Council of Victoria looks forward to seeing you at this event and welcome you forwarding this email to your friends and networks.

SUMMARY:Cataloguing Clinic - last one for 2022
DESCRIPTION:Jillian Hiscock\, the RHSV Collections Manager\, started these free cataloguing clinics during the early days of COVID and they suit Zoom very well. The clinics run for an hour from 11am – 12noon on the 4th Thursday of each month. It is a relaxed gathering of people who are finding their way through the intricacies of cataloguing material in historical collections which\, as we all know\, fall between a library and a museum with sometimes a bit of art gallery thrown in.  With our membership scattered across Australia please remember that this is Melbourne time – AEDT in summer and AEST in winter. \nJillian always prepares some material on some specific queries but questions are encouraged and\, remember\, a problem shared is a problem halved. The clinics are conversational in format rather than a seminar. If you are new to cataloguing\, or an old hand\, you will find plenty to interest you in these sessions. Jillian often has material which is emailed out to attendees after the clinic. \nThe last clinic in 2022 will be held (via Zoom) on: \n\n        Nov 24\, 2022 11:00 AM\n\nThe topic for Nov 24th will be “Cataloguing Postcards”   \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85662066892?pwd=L2REVUhtZmtHblM0ZjV0ZDNxN3FkUT09 \nMeeting ID: 856 6206 6892 \nPasscode: 227214 \nAlthough\, we provide the Zoom details above\, please do remember to register otherwise we cannot email you material after the event. \nWe plan to start these clinics again in February 2023.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Westgate Park with Lyn Allison
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour of Westgate Park with Lyn Allison \nSunday 20th November 10.00 am to 12.00 pm \nOrganised by Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society Inc \nDo join our walking tour of Westgate Park with Lyn Allison. The community bus will leave from the Port Melbourne Town Hall at 9.30 am and will return at 12.30 pm.  If you would prefer to meet us at the main carpark at the entrance to the park at 10.00 am.  BYO water\, hat\, waterproof gear if needed. \nWhether you are taking the community bus\, or meeting at the Park\, please let George Tsingos know to help the outing run smoothly \nsecretary@pmhps.org.au \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWestgate Park is a green oasis located in the heart of industrial Melbourne. The park is perhaps best known for its salt lake which turns pink seasonally in response to high salt levels\, high temperatures\, increased sunlight and lack of rainfall. Visit during the hotter weather to see the reddish algae growing in the salt crust. The lake returns to its normal colour as the weather cools and rainfall increases. \nThe shared paths in Westgate Park are popular with cyclists\, joggers and walkers\, and connect to some significant trail networks of Melbourne\, including the 53km Bay Trail. The trail starts in Westgate Park at the Yarra River and heads all the way to Frankston\, along the eastern edge of Port Phillip Bay\, and is about 2.5 hours by bike\, each way. Travel via the bicycle punt service across the Yarra River (westgatepunt.com for timetable) to access Scienceworks and the Williamstown Foreshore Trail (6km\, 23 minutes one way). \nTake the unsealed trails in Westgate Park that wind past lakes and wetlands to see the park’s plants and animals\, as well as the Earth Series Sculptures. These artworks by Lyn Moore are made from natural materials and add to the unique landscape and character of Westgate Park. Pack a picnic or make use of the free shared electric barbecue facility and come and explore this beautiful environment at the city’s doorstep. \nWestgate Park forms a sanctuary for a variety of bird species from around the world. Watch the lake for wading birds such as stilts\, ibis and spoonbills feeding on the shores\, and swimmers and divers including ducks\, gulls\, coots\, pelicans\, swans and moorhens.

SUMMARY:EMPERORS IN LILLIPUT: CLEM CHRISTESEN OF MEANJIN & STEPHEN MURRAY-SMITH OF OVERLAND
DESCRIPTION:Literary magazine editors used to be rather imperial in style\, exercising a great deal of influence in what has always been a rather restricted field: literary culture. Clem Christesen and Stephen Murray-Smith projected real authority as they fought the cultural and political battles of the day. \nThe style of their magazines was quite different. Meanjin\, formally associated with the University of Melbourne\, inclined as much to academic analysis as it did to creative writing\, interleaved with speculative pieces on Australian society and culture. It was also highly conscious of the international dimension\, and regularly published work from major overseas writers. \nOverland\, on the other hand\, while also emanating from the University of Melbourne – informally – had an entirely different project. It arose from a Communist front\, and while steadily broadening its approach and appeal\, always retained a sense of being a collective enterprise. Essentially inclusive\, Stephen sought to unite elements across the social spectrum to help create a distinctive Australian culture\, and expanded its infrastructure with some writings of his own. \nWe are delighted to welcome back Jim Davidson who will remind us of the reach and power of these legendary literary figures. \nJim Davidson has held academic appointments at the University of Melbourne\, Victoria University\, the Australian National University\, and in South Africa and England. He edited Meanjin from 1974 to 1982. His books include a scholarly edition of Anthony Trollope’s South Africa and histories of tourism and postcards. But he is best-known for his prize-winning biographies\, Lyrebird Rising: Louise Hanson-Dyer of Oiseau-Lyre and A Three-Cornered Life: The Historian WK Hancock. His double biography of Clem Christesen and Stephen Murray-Smith\, Emperors in Lilliput\, has just been published by Melbourne University Press. \nWhen you book a ticket you will be sent an automatically-generated email confirming your purchase. For those attending via Zoom\, we will send your Zoom log-in details 24 hours before the event. Please note that\, as at all RHSV events\, refreshments are served from 5:30pm until 6pm when the lecture starts. So the Zoom presentation will start at 6pm. \nIf you do not receive the email confirmation of your purchase please check your Spam or Junk Mail folder as these automatically generated emails sometimes fall foul of spam filters.

SUMMARY:East Loddon 2022 Remembrance Day Service
DESCRIPTION:A century old memorial tree at Bears Lagoon to be the site of this year’s Remembrance Day Service organised by the East Loddon Historical Society Inc. \nFor family descendants and our local communities we should never be allowed to forget the sacrifice that service personnel have given\, and continue to give\, to Australia. This Remembrance Day at Bears Lagoon there will be a tribute to the boys from Bears Lagoon who sailed off to the First World War. \nIn the 11 months following a pleasant supper dance in April 1916 held at Bears Lagoon Hall to farewell six mates off to serve their country\, the township was immersed in deep grief as three of those mates were killed in action. \nTo recognise their supreme sacrifice\, a bereaved family planted a sugar gum tree one hundred years ago\, and that impressive tree remains today\, standing tall\, wide and proud. \nDescendants will unveil a plaque dedicated to the memory the boys at the Memorial Tree\, on the corner of Dalziel and Perry Roads\, Bears Lagoon (off Loddon Valley Highway). \nJoin us to remember past and present serving men and women. \n10am Plaque unveiling followed by  \n10:45am Remembrance Day Service followed by refreshments \nPlease bring your own chair \nLest we forget. \nRSVP: elhs@bigpond.com

SUMMARY:Out of the Madhouse Forum
DESCRIPTION:Sandy Jeffs\, a former inmate of Larundel\, who became an advocate for her ‘mad’ comrades and is now a poet of distinction; and Margaret Leggatt\, sociologist\, occupational therapist and activist for the friends and families of mentally ill people. \nLarundel Psychiatric Hospital was ‘the madhouse on the edge of town’ – until the 1990s\, a Melbourne cultural icon shrouded in mystery in the outer suburb of Bundoora. What was it really like inside this madhouse? \nThis story takes us into the heart of Larundel through the voices of former inmates and staff\, exposing the best and worst aspects of the mental institutions of the times. It shows the shifts in psychiatric treatments\, the social forces at play\, and changes driving mental health policy. It explores what de-institutionalisation and ‘care in the community’ actually meant for those suffering mental illness\, as well as for those treating\, and caring for Them. \nWhat did we lose with Larundel’s closure in 1999 and the move to acute psychiatric wards in general hospitals? The notion of asylum? Is the more recent notion of ‘recovery’ a hopeful signpost towards a brave new world for mental health?

SUMMARY:ACAHUCH Symposium : Parklife 2022
DESCRIPTION:The values ascribed to streets and landscapes\, buildings and places shift over time. Access\, interpretation and display have become crucial components in recognising and enacting conservation. \nThe landscape of Quor-nóng/Royal Park has been inhabited by First Peoples for millennia. Following colonisation\, Royal Park was reserved as a public park with neighbourhoods and institutions constructed on its edges. Park Life seeks to interrogate the impact of institutions such as the university\, hospitals\, a prison\, a major park and a zoo\, as well as local precincts. Parkville is a suburb of diverse building types surrounding Royal Park\, and home to major Melbourne institutions including the symposium host\, the University of Melbourne. Parkville has played a pivotal role in Australian understandings of heritage\, memory\, commemoration\, and dwelling. \nIn 1972\, South Parkville was declared Melbourne’s first historic area by the National Trust. This one-day symposium strives to examine how global and national understandings of heritage have been reflected in all parts of Parkville\, and what different meanings Parkville has come to take on since that time. \nKEYNOTE SPEAKERS \n\nProfessor Emeritus Miles Lewis AM\nAssociate Professor Shawana Andrews\n\nVENUE AND REGISTRATION \nThe symposium will be held (in a COVID-19 safe manner) at the University of Melbourne’s Glyn Davis (MSD) Building\, and involve a walking tour of Parkville. A $50 / $25 fee covering catering costs will apply for those attending in-person. Due to COVID-19 restrictions\, these arrangements are subject to change. \nCONTACT \nThe symposium team is David Nichols\, Catherine Townsend\, Hannah Lewi and Theo Blankley.\nEnquiries | ACAHUCH Coordinator : theo.blankley@unimelb.edu.au

SUMMARY:Royal Exhibition Building Dome Promenade
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in 100 years\, visitors will have the opportunity to ascend to the base of the Royal Exhibition Building’s majestic dome and experience breathtaking views of the Melbourne skyline. \nThe Royal Exhibition Building Dome Promenade will open to the public from Saturday 29 October 2022. \nAs the first Australian building to be awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Listing\, the Royal Exhibition Building has great historical and cultural importance\, not only to Melbourne\, but to all of Australia. \nThe highly anticipated new attraction was developed as part of a Federal Government budget commitment\, restoring integral aspects of the fabric of the building to protect and preserve its world and national heritage values. \nWith its origins steeped in the Marvellous Melbourne era\, the Royal Exhibition Building was built for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition\, embodying civic values and providing a majestic place where people\, culture and ideas could come together. \nThe Dome Promenade was a key attraction of both the 1880 and 1888 international exhibitions and operated as a commercial venture\, providing visitors the opportunity to view the Melbourne skyline in much the same way as will be offered from next month. \nWith the Protection & Promotion Project now complete\, Museums Victoria CEO & Director Lynley Crosswell says she is looking forward to the Promenade deck being open so the community will have the opportunity to enjoy the building’s remarkable Promenade view\, along with an exhibition that explores the building’s history and uses over the years. \n

SUMMARY:Cataloguing Clinics 2022
\nThe clinics in 2022 will be held (via Zoom) on: \n\n        Oct 27\, 2022 11:00 AM\n        Nov 24\, 2022 11:00 AM\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85662066892?pwd=L2REVUhtZmtHblM0ZjV0ZDNxN3FkUT09 \nMeeting ID: 856 6206 6892 \nPasscode: 227214 \nAlthough\, we provide the Zoom details above\, please do remember to register otherwise we cannot email you material after the event.

SUMMARY:“Trust me on This”
DESCRIPTION:Event presented by the Fellows’ Group of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne \nSocial Trust is an important glue binding societies together.  For just one example\, countries with high trust levels had significantly better results in tackling Covid.  And trust has also been a powerful driver of economic development.  But there is another side – high levels of trust also create opportunities for the shyster\, those benefiting from spreading mistrust. \nIn this wide-ranging talk\, Tony Ward discusses the nature of social trust.  He also argues that some\, especially economic\, developments are now working to diminish trust. \nSpeaker: Tony Ward \nTony has been an Honorary Fellow in History at the University of Melbourne since 2011\, writing two books and numerous well-received articles\, both in journals and on The Conversation website.  He has had a varied work career\, in academia\, public service\, and running a private consultancy firm.  Tony has a Ph.D in economic history from Monash. \nSHAPS History Fellows’ Group \nThis presentation is part of the monthly seminar series organised by the Fellows’ Group of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne.  There is a $10 charge for attendance\, which includes refreshments.  Any surpluses contribute to a Prize Fund which supports an annual prize for history students. \nPlease note that\, on booking\, you will automatically be sent a confirmation email – please check your Junk or Spam mail folder if it is not immediately apparent in your in-box. Zoom log-in details will be sent to those attending via Zoom just 24 hours before the event. \nRefreshments are served from 5:30pm with the lecture and Zoom event due to start at 6pm.

SUMMARY:Seeds of Concrete Progress: Grain Elevators and Technology Transfer between America and Australia
DESCRIPTION:#SeedsofConcrete22 \nIn partnership with Engineering Heritage Victoria \nThe fascination of the Modern Movement with the uncompromising aesthetics of concrete silos scattered worldwide is well known. Since their first appearances in North America\, the arrays of concrete silos used for storing grain along railway networks have captured the attention of many\, including architects\, industrial archaeologists\, painters\, photographers\, and artists. However\, several aspects of the construction and engineering of their design are less known and remain worthy of more research. \nIn the early 1900s\, concrete grain elevators also blossomed along the Australian railway networks of the Wheat Belts\, marking with their enduring presence the landscapes of many rural towns and cities in New South Wales\, Queensland\, Victoria\, and Western Australia. The Australian reception of these industrial structures of American provenance is proof of the far-sighted efforts of the State Governments of the time and contribute to the nation-building of modern Australia in a global context. \nThese widespread concrete structures also have important significance in engineering and technological history due to their innovative construction methods. The rural and urban proliferation of grain silos in Australia contributed significantly to developing a confident local concrete industry. During the 1920s\, concrete technology entered a new phase bolstered by ingenious systems of movable formwork\, like slip forming. After World War II\, the mastering of engineering and construction techniques used in silos opened the doors to high-rise concrete construction methods still critical today for infrastructure and multi-storey buildings. \nDr Giorgio Marfella is a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence (Italy) and holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Melbourne. \nHe joined the Faculty of Architecture\, Building and Planning\, at the University of Melbourne in 2014\, where he is appointed as full time Senior Lecturer in Construction and Architecture. Giorgio is a registered architect and the current chairperson of the Architects Registration Board of Victoria\, and before becoming an academic he has practiced with several renowned architectural companies based in Melbourne. \nGiorgio is an international expert on the design\, technology and history of tall buildings. In his doctorate thesis\, he researched the techno-economic evolution of Melbourne’s skyscrapers during the second half of the twentieth century\, revealing how their built form was a by-product of entrepreneurial speculation\, public interest\, international design exchange and radical technological innovation. He is a research active academic and member of his Faculty’s research centre\, Australian Centre for Architectural History\, Urban and Cultural Heritage\, where he contributes for his expertise in construction history. His research activities are concentrated on the techno-economic implications of tall buildings of the present\, the cultural legacy of those from the past\, the history of technology in architecture\, and the processes of design innovation through the advancement of building products and materials. \nPhoto caption: \nOn the edge of Nhill\, across the railroad tracks\, is the former Noske Brothers’ flour mill. According to Richard Cornish writing of his ‘Six reasons to visit Nhill’ in the Sydney Morning Herald\, “Built in 1888\, it became the largest freestanding concrete structure in Australia 20 years later when a massive concrete silo was added. Now abandoned\, the site has a brutal beauty that attracts photographers\, especially at dawn and dusk\, when the dying light of the day wraps itself gradually around its concrete curves.” \n  \nPlease note that\, like all RHSV events\, we serve refreshments from 5:30pm – 6pm at which time the lecture will start and the Zoom-cast will start. When you book a ticket\, you will automatically be sent a confirmation email – please check your Junk or Spam mailbox if this email doesn’t appear in your in-box. 24 hours prior to the event\, we will send the ZOOM log-in details to all those attending via ZOOM. Once again\, check those Junk or Spam mail folders if the email isn’t in your in-box.

Annual Dickinson Lecture; \nRemembering Our State School Teachers and Pupils of Kew and Surrounds: The Home Front and Battle Front\, 1914-18 presented by Dr Rosalie Triolo\nThe Great War profoundly touched the lives of Australian teachers\, school children and local\ncommunities. SUMMARY:Lecture – Working Lives: Stories from the Immigration Museum’s Collection
DESCRIPTION:Working life stories from the past and present told through the Immigration Museum’s diverse collections. \n\nWork remains a cornerstone of identity for many of us. Yet the ways we think about work continues to evolve.  Work can shape and share ideas of community\, gender\, memory\, creativity\, sexuality\, activism\, ethnicity\, and our sense of individual and collective value. Work also acts as a thread that connects us to people\, places\, and other times. \nA new exhibition opening at Immigration Museum\, Working Lives highlights a range of stories from our Museum collections which explore the diversity of our working experiences across time. Curators\, collection managers and community storytellers will reflect on a selection of these stories\, objects and images and what they tell us about how we have collected\, documented and continue to develop our Museum collections through community engagement. \nMelbourne Museum is hosting a great talk based on the exhibition – please note that the exhibition is at the Immigration Museum\, however the talk is being held at the Melbourne Museum \nTickets for the talk can be booked here \n\n\n\n\n$5 / $8 / $10 / $12\n\n\nSpeakers\nMichelle Stevenson\, Head History & Technology Dept \nDeb Tout-Smith\, Senior Curator\, Home & Community Life \nDr Moya McFadzean\, Senior Curator\, Migration & Cultural Diversity \nLorenzo Iozzi\, Manager\, Image Collections \nNyadol Nyuon OAM\, Executive Director\, Sir Zelman Cowan Centre\, Victoria University; former refugee & lawyer\, writer & human rights activist
