SUMMARY:Celebrating Holden in Fishermans Bend
DESCRIPTION:For over 80 years\, the former Holden factory in Fishermens Bend provided a home for innovation and social connection in Fishermans Bend.    \nThe launch of Australia’s first locally made mass-production car in Fishermans Bend on 29 November 1948 by Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley was a milestone in Australian manufacturing. The FX\, as it became known\, was an immediate success\, as was the FJ\, launched in 1953. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a premiere film screening\, book launch\, digital map debut and panel discussion about a surprising and forgotten aspect of Australian history – the enthralling history of the rescues of thousands of colonists by Aboriginal people from life-threatening situations such as bush fires\, floods\, shipwrecks and being lost in the bush. \nAward-winning author Associate Professor (Dr) Fred Cahir discusses his latest book They Rescued Us! Aboriginal Heroes on Country with filmmakers Lucinda Horrocks and Jary Nemo of Wind & Sky Productions\, whose new film Acts of Heroism will be screened on the day. \nThis short film is a companion to a web-based education portal Aboriginal Heroes of Fire\, Food and Flood which spatially maps locations and documented instances of Aboriginal heroism to do with fire\, flood and food in Victoria and Southeastern Australia from the 1800s to the 1930s. \nProfessor Andrew Gunstone\, the inaugural Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor Reconciliation at Federation University will contribute to the discussion which will be moderated by Lucy Bracey from Way Back When\, a group of professional historians who work with communities to tell their stories. The afternoon will include a performance by First Nations composer and singer Deb Lowah Clark. \nThis event complements the Gallery exhibition Beating About The Bush in its critical questioning of the stories Australians have been told about the bush and who it is that Australians regard as pioneers and heroes. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the launch. \nThey Rescued Us! Aboriginal Heroes on Country is published by Ballarat Heritage Services. Acts of Heroism was funded by the Telematics Trust and is a collaboration between Federation University historians\, the Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation (CeRDI) at Federation University and Wind & Sky Productions. DESCRIPTION:Hotham History Project invites you to a talk on Ornamental Cast Iron Lace – by Robin Vowels. \nIn the 1860s and 70s one of Hotham’s mayors\, William Hutchison\, operated a foundry in Little Bourke Street where he made some of the ornamental iron lace that still graces houses around North and West Melbourne today. \nAlthough he was well known at the time Hutchison’s work does not carry a maker’s name so Robin Vowels from RMIT decided to work out (if he could) which pieces were from Hutchison’s foundry. \nCome and hear what clues he used and what he found out.

SUMMARY:What is a Drill Hall?
DESCRIPTION:Recently the RHSV took part in Open House Melbourne which concentrated our minds on the history and architecture of our home\, the Australian Army Medical Corps Drill Hall which was built\, like so many others in 1938 in the build-up to WWII. The building’s history\, its original purpose and its architecture are inextricably linked.  And who better to explain those connections than Mike O’Brien? Mike will be addressing Drill Halls in general – what is drill? what happens in drill halls? \nMike is a committed community activist and a believer in a fair go. He is an experienced manager and company director\, has run an iconic Melbourne antiquarian bookstore for 17 years and is an advocate for small business as the main engine that drives our economy. He had an extensive military career but balanced it with directorships of a listed company and a non-bank financial institution. He has tertiary qualifications in Science and Management. He has lectured around the world on cruise ships for 10 years gaining an enviable number of days at sea\, an excellent remedy for a former Infantryman. He writes local history and believes our built heritage should be highly valued. \nThis lecture will be live at the RHSV and also offered on ZOOM. \nCome along and enjoy some Christmas cheer as this is our last in person event for the year. Like all RHSV lectures we will have refreshments (with a Christmas theme) from 5:30pm until 6pm when the lecture will commence. The Zoom audience will log-in at 6pm.

DESCRIPTION:Dr Shawn Sobers\nMaterial culture and the echoes and legacies of transatlantic enslavement – before and after the Colston statue\nDr Shawn Sobers is Professor of Cultural Interdisciplinary Practice and convenor of the Critical Race and Culture Research Group at University of the West of England (UWE). Shawn is also a filmmaker\, photographer and writer and a member of the “We are Bristol History Commission” which was set up in 2020 in response to the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston\, a 17th century English merchant\, slave trader\, and member of Parliament. Shawn will speak about his work on the Commission\, the re-display of the Colston sculpture and ideas and issues around public monuments and contested culture. \nThe Annual Duldig Lecture on Sculpture was inaugurated in 1986 to commemorate the life and work of the sculptor Karl Duldig and artist and inventor Slawa Horowitz-Duldig.

DESCRIPTION:The History Council of Victoria invite you to join them for the final Making Public Histories of 2022 as Associate Professor Ruth Balint\, Ms Chi Vu and Associate Professor Shameran Slewa-Younan share personal stories as well as their research and work in different refugee contexts and cultures. \n  \nRuth Balint \n‘Borders and the Family’ \nWhen my grandparents arrived in Australia in 1938\, they immediately started to try and bring out other Jewish family members trapped in Eastern Europe as World War Two began. In researching this family story\, I began to see a wider history of resistance by Jewish families separated by war and borders. This talk will consider these experiences of the refugee family in Australia’s recent past.  \nChi Vu \n‘This language is beginning to invent another me’ \nChi Vu takes in her background as a child refugee from Vietnam to discuss how her creative writing seeks to address themes of diaspora\, fragmented memories and narratives which are dispersed across languages. Drawing on the fields of sociolinguistics and translingual literary studies\, Vu proposes that her theatre and prose works are necessarily scattered across art forms\, genres\, as well as her two languages – English and Vietnamese.  \nShameran Slewa-Younan \n‘Mental health promotion for refugee and other culturally and/or linguistically diverse migrant populations: Lessons from the field’ \nWorking within a community as diverse as south western Sydney requires undertaking a community driven and engaged clinical and research agenda. Shameran will begin by introducing herself and her own cultural background. DESCRIPTION:Jillian Hiscock\, the RHSV Collections Manager\, started these free cataloguing clinics during the early days of COVID and they suit Zoom very well. The clinics run for an hour from 11am – 12noon on the 4th Thursday of each month. It is a relaxed gathering of people who are finding their way through the intricacies of cataloguing material in historical collections which\, as we all know\, fall between a library and a museum with sometimes a bit of art gallery thrown in.  With our membership scattered across Australia please remember that this is Melbourne time – AEDT in summer and AEST in winter. \nJillian always prepares some material on some specific queries but questions are encouraged and\, remember\, a problem shared is a problem halved. The clinics are conversational in format rather than a seminar. If you are new to cataloguing\, or an old hand\, you will find plenty to interest you in these sessions. The park is perhaps best known for its salt lake which turns pink seasonally in response to high salt levels\, high temperatures\, increased sunlight and lack of rainfall. Visit during the hotter weather to see the reddish algae growing in the salt crust. The lake returns to its normal colour as the weather cools and rainfall increases. \nThe shared paths in Westgate Park are popular with cyclists\, joggers and walkers\, and connect to some significant trail networks of Melbourne\, including the 53km Bay Trail. The trail starts in Westgate Park at the Yarra River and heads all the way to Frankston\, along the eastern edge of Port Phillip Bay\, and is about 2.5 hours by bike\, each way. Travel via the bicycle punt service across the Yarra River (westgatepunt.com for timetable) to access Scienceworks and the Williamstown Foreshore Trail (6km\, 23 minutes one way). \nTake the unsealed trails in Westgate Park that wind past lakes and wetlands to see the park’s plants and animals\, as well as the Earth Series Sculptures. These artworks by Lyn Moore are made from natural materials and add to the unique landscape and character of Westgate Park. Pack a picnic or make use of the free shared electric barbecue facility and come and explore this beautiful environment at the city’s doorstep. \nWestgate Park forms a sanctuary for a variety of bird species from around the world. Watch the lake for wading birds such as stilts\, ibis and spoonbills feeding on the shores\, and swimmers and divers including ducks\, gulls\, coots\, pelicans\, swans and moorhens.

DESCRIPTION:Genealogical Society of Victoria members-only Flagstaff Gardens History Tour and Lunch. This event was originally planned for Thursday 22nd of September but\, when that day became the National Day of Mourning for Queen Elizabeth II\, the event was rescheduled for Friday 18th of November.\nThe Genealogical Society of Victoria is organising a guided walking tour of historic Flagstaff gardens. The walk will begin and end at the RHSV’s home in the Drill Hall\, opposite Flagstaff Gardens at 239 A’Beckett Street\, Melbourne. \nThe walk commences at 10:30am\, followed by lunch on your return\, approx 12noon until 1pm. The walk will take place whatever the weather so please dress appropriately (comfortable shoes\, wet weather gear if necessary\, some water etc). The walk takes place on graded walking paths and is not strenuous or long but you will be walking to the top of the hill in the gardens and you will be on your feet for a little over an hour. \nThe walking tour will climb Flagstaff Hill to consider its place in Melbourne’s topography and pre-European history as well as its early role as a burial ground\, flagstaff signalling station and magnetic and meteorological observatory. DESCRIPTION:Literary magazine editors used to be rather imperial in style\, exercising a great deal of influence in what has always been a rather restricted field: literary culture. Clem Christesen and Stephen Murray-Smith projected real authority as they fought the cultural and political battles of the day. \nThe style of their magazines was quite different. Meanjin\, formally associated with the University of Melbourne\, inclined as much to academic analysis as it did to creative writing\, interleaved with speculative pieces on Australian society and culture. It was also highly conscious of the international dimension\, and regularly published work from major overseas writers. \nOverland\, on the other hand\, while also emanating from the University of Melbourne – informally – had an entirely different project. It arose from a Communist front\, and while steadily broadening its approach and appeal\, always retained a sense of being a collective enterprise. Essentially inclusive\, Stephen sought to unite elements across the social spectrum to help create a distinctive Australian culture\, and expanded its infrastructure with some writings of his own. \nWe are delighted to welcome back Jim Davidson who will remind us of the reach and power of these legendary literary figures. \nJim Davidson has held academic appointments at the University of Melbourne\, Victoria University\, the Australian National University\, and in South Africa and England. He edited Meanjin from 1974 to 1982. His books include a scholarly edition of Anthony Trollope’s South Africa and histories of tourism and postcards. But he is best-known for his prize-winning biographies\, Lyrebird Rising: Louise Hanson-Dyer of Oiseau-Lyre and A Three-Cornered Life: The Historian WK Hancock. SUMMARY:East Loddon 2022 Remembrance Day Service
DESCRIPTION:A century old memorial tree at Bears Lagoon to be the site of this year’s Remembrance Day Service organised by the East Loddon Historical Society Inc. \nFor family descendants and our local communities we should never be allowed to forget the sacrifice that service personnel have given\, and continue to give\, to Australia. This Remembrance Day at Bears Lagoon there will be a tribute to the boys from Bears Lagoon who sailed off to the First World War. \nIn the 11 months following a pleasant supper dance in April 1916 held at Bears Lagoon Hall to farewell six mates off to serve their country\, the township was immersed in deep grief as three of those mates were killed in action. \nTo recognise their supreme sacrifice\, a bereaved family planted a sugar gum tree one hundred years ago\, and that impressive tree remains today\, standing tall\, wide and proud. \nDescendants will unveil a plaque dedicated to the memory the boys at the Memorial Tree\, on the corner of Dalziel and Perry Roads\, Bears Lagoon (off Loddon Valley Highway). \nJoin us to remember past and present serving men and women. \n10am Plaque unveiling followed by  \n10:45am Remembrance Day Service followed by refreshments \nPlease bring your own chair \nLest we forget. \nRSVP: elhs@bigpond.com

DESCRIPTION:Sandy Jeffs\, a former inmate of Larundel\, who became an advocate for her ‘mad’ comrades and is now a poet of distinction; and Margaret Leggatt\, sociologist\, occupational therapist and activist for the friends and families of mentally ill people.  \nLarundel Psychiatric Hospital was ‘the madhouse on the edge of town’ – until the 1990s\, a Melbourne cultural icon shrouded in mystery in the outer suburb of Bundoora. What was it really like inside this madhouse?  \nThis story takes us into the heart of Larundel through the voices of former inmates and staff\, exposing the best and worst aspects of the mental institutions of the times. It shows the shifts in psychiatric treatments\, the social forces at play\, and changes driving mental health policy. It explores what de-institutionalisation and ‘care in the community’ actually meant for those suffering mental illness\, as well as for those treating\, and caring for Them.  \nWhat did we lose with Larundel’s closure in 1999 and the move to acute psychiatric wards in general hospitals? The notion of asylum? Is the more recent notion of ‘recovery’ a hopeful signpost towards a brave new world for mental health?

DESCRIPTION:Connecting Communities\nThe importance of writing local history and heritage\nRomsey & Lancefield Districts Historical Society will be holding its second annual HistoryFest in November 2022. \nThis event is aimed fairly and squarely at historical societies and their members so do come along and learn from others\, and share your knowledge and experience. \nEight Historical Societies in central Victoria are joining together for the day to talk about connecting their communities to the work they do. For decades historical societies have helped their local community\, and those more distant\, explore their family history and heritage. They also assist home buyers find out who lived in their house before them. The Royal Historical Society of Victoria will discuss the need for local historical societies\, their core work\, and how the RHSV can assist us. Two distinguished historians – Peter Yule and Richard Trembath – will talk about their experience writing local history and its importance to the history of Victoria. Peter and Richard are engaging speakers and have a great deal to offer our HistoryFest.\nAnd local historical societies will talk about their latest books and latest projects. These books will be available for sale during and at the end of the day while the audience enjoys music and exchanging ideas. SUMMARY:ACAHUCH Symposium : Parklife 2022
DESCRIPTION:The values ascribed to streets and landscapes\, buildings and places shift over time. Access\, interpretation and display have become crucial components in recognising and enacting conservation. \nThe landscape of Quor-nóng/Royal Park has been inhabited by First Peoples for millennia. Following colonisation\, Royal Park was reserved as a public park with neighbourhoods and institutions constructed on its edges. Park Life seeks to interrogate the impact of institutions such as the university\, hospitals\, a prison\, a major park and a zoo\, as well as local precincts. Parkville is a suburb of diverse building types surrounding Royal Park\, and home to major Melbourne institutions including the symposium host\, the University of Melbourne. Parkville has played a pivotal role in Australian understandings of heritage\, memory\, commemoration\, and dwelling. \nIn 1972\, South Parkville was declared Melbourne’s first historic area by the National Trust. This one-day symposium strives to examine how global and national understandings of heritage have been reflected in all parts of Parkville\, and what different meanings Parkville has come to take on since that time. \nKEYNOTE SPEAKERS \n\nProfessor Emeritus Miles Lewis AM\nAssociate Professor Shawana Andrews\n\nVENUE AND REGISTRATION \nThe symposium will be held (in a COVID-19 safe manner) at the University of Melbourne’s Glyn Davis (MSD) Building\, and involve a walking tour of Parkville. A $50 / $25 fee covering catering costs will apply for those attending in-person. DESCRIPTION:For the first time in 100 years\, visitors will have the opportunity to ascend to the base of the Royal Exhibition Building’s majestic dome and experience breathtaking views of the Melbourne skyline. \nThe Royal Exhibition Building Dome Promenade will open to the public from Saturday 29 October 2022. \nAs the first Australian building to be awarded a UNESCO World Heritage Listing\, the Royal Exhibition Building has great historical and cultural importance\, not only to Melbourne\, but to all of Australia. \nThe highly anticipated new attraction was developed as part of a Federal Government budget commitment\, restoring integral aspects of the fabric of the building to protect and preserve its world and national heritage values. \nWith its origins steeped in the Marvellous Melbourne era\, the Royal Exhibition Building was built for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition\, embodying civic values and providing a majestic place where people\, culture and ideas could come together. \nThe Dome Promenade was a key attraction of both the 1880 and 1888 international exhibitions and operated as a commercial venture\, providing visitors the opportunity to view the Melbourne skyline in much the same way as will be offered from next month. \nWith the Protection & Promotion Project now complete\, Museums Victoria CEO & Director Lynley Crosswell says she is looking forward to the Promenade deck being open so the community will have the opportunity to enjoy the building’s remarkable Promenade view\, along with an exhibition that explores the building’s history and uses over the years. \n

DESCRIPTION:Jillian Hiscock\, the RHSV Collections Manager\, started these free cataloguing clinics during the early days of COVID and they suit Zoom very well. The clinics run for an hour from 11am – 12noon on the 4th Thursday of each month. It is a relaxed gathering of people who are finding their way through the intricacies of cataloguing material in historical collections which\, as we all know\, fall between a library and a museum with sometimes a bit of art gallery thrown in.  With our membership scattered across Australia please remember that this is Melbourne time – AEDT in summer and AEST in winter. \nJillian always prepares some material on some specific queries but questions are encouraged and\, remember\, a problem shared is a problem halved. The clinics are conversational in format rather than a seminar. If you are new to cataloguing\, or an old hand\, you will find plenty to interest you in these sessions.
