SUMMARY:Living on Mallee Country - Deep Time to 1900
DESCRIPTION:RHSV President Emeritus Professor Richard Broome is delivering the 2019 History Council of Victoria’s Annual Lecture. \nMallee country being semi-arid scrub country has made living upon it difficult for humans but not other living things. This lecture will explore how mallee country was used by Aboriginal people from Deep Time to the pastoral era and how Europeans found\, settled and often abandoned it as marginal sheep country. Living on mallee country revealed how Nature and Culture each shaped the other. \nIn the foyer\, before and after the lecture\, Monash University Publishing will be selling advance copies of Mallee Country: Land\, People\, History\, co-authored by Richard Broome\, Charles Fahey\, Katie Holmes and Andrea Gaynor. \nBookings can be made via the History Council website at https://www.historycouncilvic.org.au/annual_lecture

SUMMARY:ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. MODULE 3: SCANNING FOR BEGINNERS
DESCRIPTION:The RHSV is offering a series of 6 linked workshops which cover cataloguing and digitisation. This series of workshops starts with basic concepts and builds in complexity. \nWe have spaced the workshops so that participants have time in which to put into practice their new skills before the next workshop. \nSome participants will want to book for the full series of 6 workshops and others will want to choose those individual workshops that are most suitable for them. So\, although the series is designed as a cohesive whole\, the individual workshops also work as stand-alone training sessions. \nAll workshops are limited to 20 participants and will be lead by Sophie Shilling\, our digital expert. They are all to be held at the RHSV: Officers’ Mess Upstairs\, RHSV 239 A’Beckett St\, Melbourne. This room\, unfortunately\,  is only accessible by a staircase – there is no disabled access. \nMODULE 3: SCANNING FOR BEGINNERS\nFRIDAY 4 OCTOBER 1PM – 4PM\nThis workshop is aimed at those who are new to scanning. It will cover some terminology relating to digital images\, and how to prepare documents for scanning before participants scan some documents using flatbed scanners. Participants will compare the document to the digital image and learn basic image manipulation to have the best possible digitised version. Then\, file naming and storage standards will be applied to the digitised documents.
