The RHSV is reviving a wonderful old tradition of organising tours to our colleagues in historical societies across rural Victoria. Unfortunately the first event is currently cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. So Wonthaggi - a town with an unusual history as a State Modern Town - may be rescheduled at a future time .

It is always exciting when Robyn Annear releases another of her captivating books into the wild and her latest book, which releases on the 30th of November, promises to be fabulous. Robyn has devised 7 historic walks around Melbourne and she will be leading a walking tour for RHSV members of one of those walks - around the Queen Victoria Markets and Flagstaff Gardens area.

Victoria’s Earliest Potteries - Lecture and Exhibition Guest Speaker: Gregory Hill, who is recognised as the leading authority on Australian Colonial Pottery and Australian Art Pottery. His book, Victoria’s Earliest Potteries, featured convict era potters and Victoria’s earliest pottery which was close to Superintendent La Trobe’s 'Jolimont' estate near the Yarra River. On Sunday 31st of July, as part of Open House Melbourne, we will be offering free guided tours of the Australian Army Medical Corps Drill Hall which is now home to the RHSV and several performing arts companies. Our wonderful building is an art deco masterpiece built in 1938 as Australia and the rest of the world readied themselves for another world war.

The Genealogical Society of Victoria is organising a guided walking tour of historic Flagstaff gardens followed by a light lunch and a tour of the RHSV's resources. The walk will begin and end at the RHSV's home in the Drill Hall, opposite Flagstaff Gardens at 239 A'Beckett Street, Melbourne. The walking tour will climb Flagstaff Hill to consider its place in Melbourne's topography and pre-European history as well as its early role as a burial ground, flagstaff signalling station and magnetic and meteorological observatory. An absolute "must do" walk for understanding the history and character of Melbourne city.
