Description
Brunswick, as a Melbourne suburb, first developed in the mid-19th Century, as a farming area between the two creeks, the Merri Merri and the Moonee Ponds. The Fleming family lived there for 70 years, from 1849, breeding cattle, horses and poultry. John Wood Fleming combined this with unwavering duty to Council affairs and as a JP and local magistrate. For 52 years, from 1867 to 1919, he served on the Brunswick Council, including four times as mayor, thus gaining the title of:
‘The Grand Old Man of Brunswick Municipal Council’.
This book, dedicated to his loyal wife Mary Weir Fleming, tells the story of his life.
Researched and written by Margaret E Fleming.

Hi Margaret! I love your book!
I have a question…
Can you confirm…or not that Ellen Sprowall Fleming 1844-1905 is a sister of your John Wood Fleming 1837-1919?
Ellen Sorowall Fleming was my GG Grandmother. She married an Alfred Strugnell. And their descendants ended up in Mukinbudin WA. farming sheep and wheat.
Her name does appear on a Familysearch website but I’m unsure if this info is accurate.
We are in WA and are having a family reunion in June 2025.
Thank you..
