Description
SECONDHAND BOOK
This classic in Australian academic literature is reissued as a historical document in the form in which it first appeared and in which it has been known and used since first published in 1924.
Land settlement was a critical issue in Australian history; there is nothing quite like it in the history of any other country. Within one hundred years from the first settlement of the continent, following in the wake of the explorers, pioneer squatters with their flocks and herds had conquered the vast distances. Most of the three million square miles was covered by some form of settlement posing unique and challenging problems for government and administration.
Sir Stephen has traced the history of Australian land settlement from the earliest administration of land grants through to the development of soldier settlement schemes and closer settlement in the twentieth century.
Although it is forty-four years since this book was first published it still remains one of the most authoritative and comprehensive works in the field.
