Local histories generally deal with a specific town or area; wider accounts tend to skip over individual places. In the one case the wider perspective is lost; in the other, interesting facts are sacrificed to broad continuity.
This book goes far to remedy the defect, for Victorian readers at least. The ‘grey ribbon’ of the title is the Hume Highway, Route No 31, which passes through many Victorian country towns before crossing the border at Albury-Wodonga on its way to Sydney.
Today’s hectic travellers, passing through in motorised minutes, see very little of the towns flashing past. The petrol stations and hamburger shops form the major part of their impressions, a pity because there are many delightful stories and incidents connected with older, less stridently noticeable buildings in towns like Diggers’ Rest, Kilmore, Seymour and Violet Town.
Mrs Field has done thousands of travellers a great service by taking the time and trouble to stop, discover and record these little-known aspects of our history.
