William Josiah Waring of Waring & Rowdon Master Builders by Philip Terrell Waring

This work is the life story of the author’s paternal grandfather William Josiah Waring, who was born and grew up in the suburb of Fitzroy, Melbourne. From his time as a teenager his life was linked to Lewis William Rowdon, initially as a neighbour, then workmate, but soon enough as a business partner for his entire life.

The author never knew this grandfather, he having died over thirty years before the author was born, and when the author’s father was only five years old. In addition, almost nothing in the way of family stories or photographs were ever found by or handed down to the author, and the following account is based almost entirely on research into public records and old newspapers and journals. The exceptions were several discussions by the author had with his uncle Vernon Kingsley Waring in 1997, a decade after his own father had died, and some incidental photographs, which are acknowledged in the text. Cameras did not seem to exist in the broader family. One of only two photographs of William Josiah Waring known to the author was found in a builders’ journal, and is included in the text.
