About this objectGlass slide of a photograph that depicts a view along the original Railway Pier, Sandridge, which was built to give shipping access to the first railway in Australia in 1854. There are several ships docked, including the Ozone, the Hygeia and the Steamer Gem. Fences and railway lines run along the piers, goods are being loaded or unloaded into carts. There is a gathering of people, men, children and dogs.
Station Pier was built in 1924-30 on a slightly different angle.
One of many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
Selby gave a lecture entitled 'Old Melbourne and Old Sandridge: The History of Hobsons Bay', at Town Hall, Bay Street, Port Melbourne, on 9th October 1928.
