About this objectOval studio portrait of a bearded man.
George Hughes was born in 1836, County Armagh, Northern Ireland to parents, William Hughes and Mary Gryson.
About the middle of September 1854, aboard the 'Cheviot', he sailed from Greenock, Scotland to Melbourne.
Mr Hughes ventured to the country diggings of Victoria before travelling to New Zealand between 1861 - 1871. He also worked as a gardener.
At the age of 36 years, gave up drinking of alcohol and abstained until his death in 1922
In 1917, Mr Hughes presented the RHSV with this photograph and some interesting articles in the Register of Early Colonists - H-0116
