Name/TitlePanoramic view of Fitzroy from East Melbourne, c. 1900
About this objectView of the north-west corner of Victoria Parade and Brunswick Street, which includes the cable engine house for North Fitzroy cable tram line. On the corner of Morrison Place and Victoria parade, on the East Melbourne side, is the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (later demolished). The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital remains on the same site today and was rebuilt in the late 1970s.
The Yorkshire Brewery Tower, at 88 Wellington Street, was the tallest building in Collingwood. Architect and engineer James Wood built the multi-level, polychrome brick tower in 1876. It was designed in French Second Empire style and was the prominent feature of a brewing complex. It belonged to the architect's father John Wood, who also ran the Yorkshire Hotel.
Carlton and United Breweries bought the business in 1909.
CUB sold the property towards the end of the 20th century, after the Yorkshire Brewery was added to the Victorian Heritage Register. Its current dislocation among residential and commercial properties highlights its architectural dignity and historic value.
