About this objectThis photograph of Melbourne Town Hall, which is located on north-east corner of Swanston and Collins streets, has been taken from the opposite corner of the intersection.
This is an unusual photograph of the Town Hall, captured at night during a fireworks display celebrating the opening of the first Australian parliament by Prince George, the son of King Edward. The building's architectural features are decorated with lights and illuminated signs reading, LONG MAY HE REIGN on the Collins Street facade, and WELCOME TO OUR ROYAL VISITORS on the Bourke Street facade.
In the foreground a large crowd is gathered in the street, looking towards the building and the fireworks in the night sky.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
