Name/TitleBourke Street looking west from Russell Street, Melbourne, 1899
About this objectView looking west, from Russell Street, showing the businesses along the north side of Bourke Street.
Prominent buildings on the north side include the Melbourne Coffee Palace (No. 216) and Parer Brothers' Restaurant Cafe (Crystal Cafe) and Hotel (No. 200). Parer Brothers had interests in many hotels over a long period. Immediately to the left of Parer Brothers is Kreitmayer's Waxworks, which at this date offered to the public a combination of wax figures and vaudeville acts, including the advertised 'Professor Davis', a magician. Just five properties down from there was the Theatre Royal. Discernible in the distance are the General Post Office and Drapers Block (alongside the post office), with signage for Robertson & Moffat (later the site for the Myer department store).
Copied from "Remembering Melbourne: 1850-1960", p. 42.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
Selby probably showed this slide during his many lectures on old or early Melbourne, given during the 1930s. "When Melbourne Takes Rank as a City", was given on 12th February, 1948, at the Assembly Hall, Collins Street.
