About this objectA hand drawn copy of the map made by Thomas Learmonth and included with his letter to Charles La Trobe, one of many given to the Governor on his departure from Melbourne on 5 May 1854. These were published in "Letter's from Victorian Pioneers"

Geelong was identified as site for town in 1802 but was only gazetted as a town in 1838, making this map significant and early.
Features names of stations around Geelong taken up in 1837 (in red, including Learmonth station) and those further afield in 1838 and 1839 (in black), with rivers and mountains across to Portland. Extends westward towards Portland and Grampians.
Indicates around 25 stations in red (taken up in 1837) and stations in black occupied in 1838, along with prominent western Victorian towns (Warrnambool), lakes (Corangamite) and ranges (Anakie, Grampians).
