Name/TitleJames Wilson Reid, brother-in-law of Dr. Robert L. McAdam, c. 1853-1903
About this objectOval studio portrait of James Wilson Reid, Jessie McAdam's eldest brother.
According to a piece published in The Ballarat Star, June 1886, James was the accountant at the Bank of Victoria, Ballarat, for a number of years, and was presented with "an address and gold watch and chain", when he left to go to Melbourne. He was greatly admired, as was his father, William Reid, who was described as "one of the earliest, most enterprising, and energetic pioneers of Ballarat."
In a affidavit which was read during the "Mercantile Bank Case" of 1893, Reid describes himself as a sharebroker, located at 333 Collins Street, Melbourne.
Reid did not marry. He died on Christmas Day, 1903, aged 50, at his brother-in-law's house, Stormont, St Kilda, and left his estate to his sisters.
