Name/TitleExplorers and early colonists of Victoria, 1872
About this objectMontage of oval shaped portraits of over 700 "explorers and early colonists of Victoria" collected together in a gold-edged shield shape. All the portraits are numbered.
There are eight portraits that are larger than the others as following: 1- Edward Henty, 60- Sir Redmond Barry, 80- Mr. Justice Williams, 82- R. W. Pohlman (Judge), 87- Sir W. Stawell, 321- Sir Francis Murphy, 677- Charles J. La Trobe, 678- Right Rev. C. Perry.
The remaining portraits are of similar size, but there are small ones around the edge, and even smaller portraits squeezed into the gaps.
T. F. Chuck, the compiler and producer of this labour intensive work, also produced a key to the numbered portraits in a pamphlet form costing one shilling (The National Library of Australia, Trove).
Isaac Selby reproduced the photograph in his book, "The Old Pioneers' Memorial History of Melbourne", p. 417 (1924), and an index to the numbered portraits at the end of his book.
