About this objectThe Hoffman Brickworks, also known variously as the Brunswick Brick Tile and Pottery Company and Hoffman Brick and Potteries Company, was established in Brunswick in 1870. Hoffman was the name of the German kilns which were used and which were advanced technology for the time.

The Hoffman’s Brickworks is an important part of Victoria’s industrial heritage and was the source of many of the bricks used to construct Victorian buildings in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries until ceasing brick-making operations in 1993. The site was sold in 1996 for redevelopment.

The no.2 works were built on Dawson Street in 1884, south of the original site. Over its operating years, the brickworks was owned by Clifton Holdings, Nubrick and Austral Brick Company.

The Save the Brickworks Inc. group was established in the 1990s to ensure the conservation of the remaining site at 72-108 Dawson Street, Brunswick.

The RHSV holds a collection produced, collected and collated by the Save the Brickworks Inc. group of twelve boxes, three A3 sleeves, objects and photographs. The collection documents the activities of Save the Brickworks from its inception and incorporation in the late 1990s and spanning the post-industrial development of the site.
