Name/TitleSurveyor's Camp, Sandridge [ Port Melbourne ] c. 1839
About this objectA coloured drawing of a beach setting with two men and a large dog sitting around a fire, a wooden hut on wheels with a horse grazing nearby, and a person standing by surveying equipment. In the background, through a gap in the trees, can be seen what looks like a wooden barrel on a pole.
The artist, Liardet, landed at William Darke's camp in 1839. He drew the encampment including Darke, one of three surveyors sent by Governor Bourke to survey the shore of Port Philip Bay, taking readings in front of his caravan. A red flag was replaced by a more durable barrel at the top of the pole. [Liardet's water-colours of early Melbourne, MUP, 1973, p. 78]
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
