Name/TitleForrest Hill and cutting, South Yarra-Prahran, c. 1845
About this objectPhotograph of a tinted drawing showing the road that was cut through Forrest Hill. Despite the cutting it is still quite a steep climb for the man pushing a handcart, a man and child walking, and a donkey and trap. Mounted at the top of the hill is Waterloo, the cottage built by Lieut. Charles Forrest in 1841, the first house built in Prahran. We are told "it was a beautiful home - built by two ticket-of-leave men from Vandemonia (Tasmania) - with its terraced gardens down to the river banks", (Early Toorak and District, E. M. Rob, Robertson & Mullens Limited, Melbourne, 1934, p.13).
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
